Feature Request: Support for Embedding YouTube Videos via iframe #5912

I'm not sure whether this feature already exists, but I couldn't find an option to embed YouTube videos using an iframe. If it's not yet available, I believe adding support for iframe-based YouTube embeds would be a valuable enhancement.

You can add a note as html with the following content:

Then create a Rendernote. U can link this note whereevery you want then. As a workaround.

yes, I know.
since Trilium reads config.ini and writes logs and backups, there is no doubt that the server has access to this folder.
it's just a matter of 'let's do it' ;)

@diyoyo What about things like my L:/Lectures/A/2_16_2025.mp4? How do I embed that into my trilium without copying it into trilium? I meant folders outside of trilium sorry for not being clear.

Trilium server can only go as far as the user allows, in modern OS, so:

it's not technically possible...
unless there is an environmental variable, that you can overwrite before launching the app, and that will point to the movie folder. Even in that case, if the movie folder needs to seat outside of trilium-data, Trilium would have to trigger some kind of "Require Permission to Access this folder" from the OS.
even in that case, one would have to make sure that Trilium has a streaming plugin.

⇒ Fancier solution : I was about to say PeerTube, a self-hosted streaming solution for your own movies, but then https://github.com/OwnTube-tv/ popped-up 😃

I guess from there, you can perform the same hack as for youtube movies.

Ok, my answer is erroneous:

Trilium obviously has streaming capabilities 😃
not all OS require the use to click on "authorize Trilium to access myFolder".

So I don't know what would be simpler to use OwnTube-tv.

Personally, I use https://immich.app/ as a self hosted solution for all my family picture and movies, and to sync from my phone.
It has a share option that create a public link to a single photo, an album or more.
You can use that link in a webview in Trilum

The simplest solution of all is actually:

Copy/Paste the embedURL as the value of #webViewSrc within a WebView Note
That's all Folks 🎉

To be a bit more specific, a youtube video is assigned an ID (let's call it movieID). Then, there are three kinds of url:

the regular one : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moveID
the short link : https://youtu.be/moveID
the embed link : https://www.youtube.com/embed/movieID

The latter is the one used in the iframe. If you use any of the frist two links, it will include the whole Youtube page, but if you use the embed link, you'll just have the frame!

Trilium generates the following HTML on its own :

         <iframe style="flex: 1 1 auto; width: 100%; border: 0px;">
      </iframe>

This thread should be part on my stop reinventing the wheel, trilium is already awesome folder ;)

PS: ok, if you need multiple movies in one note, then you would need a custom made renderer, or just the Include Note tool from the CKEditor toolbar.
