This version increments the sync version from v33 to v34, so only clients >=v0.91.4-beta will be able to sync to a server running this version.

woohoo! I'm so happy to see the Geo map note type, thank you! This was on my personal future feature list, but far far down the road since I'm still a newbie with java/typescript. How does it work? I can create the Map note straightforwardly but don't see how to create the pins from child notes.

Aha! Found it.

A Geo Map note will have [+] folder icon at top right. Pushing that will invoke "click on map to set pin location". Doing so creates a child 'Text' note with owned attributes like #iconClass="bx bx-pin" #geolocation=60.545589,-135.445283 .

You can create new notes or make an existing note a map pin simply by adding the geolocation= attrib.

The note formatted content will show in a mini pop-up when clicked on. (Although it shows a scroll bar it's not usuable at present. I imagine that'll get improved before long.)

The Mermaid diagram improvements are also VERY nice! 👌
Being able to place them 'in-line' and toggle off the 'code-view' is perfect!

@meichthys , yes, it's pretty nice.
However it has a few downsides, such as not being able to print them properly, I guess.

This comes as a plugin from the CKEditor guys, on my side I've made the necessary changes so that we can actually use it on my side. Maybe in the future we can do this kind of thing for other note types as well, kind of like include note but editable.

For the printing issue, would it be possible (when printing) to automatically insert an image reference to the diagram like we can copy from the full mermaid diagram notes:

Th ans fir the map notes implementation and mobile version improvements (“sub-par/buggy” mobile view is why I keep going back to Obsidian*).

Being based on “plain” .md files instead of a database is a huge is a big plus as well BUT not being open source is a minus.

@kalmigs Yah, there both have similar features and main difference is the approach to the data management. Trillium is getting close to be a perfect replacement for Obsidian (Trillium Docker instance on a Raspberry Pi + a remote access to it via Tailscale is a killer combo).

@eliandoran 2 reasons that “a folder with plain markdown files” are better than a database (for me):

1. The ease of moving to another app if the project won’t be supported anymore (so no “proprietary” file formats. Yes, I know that Trillium database is easy to open and export but “just moving my folder with text files” is way easier).
2. Being able to open and read/edit my notes pretty much on any platform and situation - I can see my nites without using Obsidian (when I’m in a pinch). I can open a Github/Dropbox backup folder and hist choose a markdown file that I need to see (I can’t do ut so easily with a database).

On db vs files:

To help with the "assurance I can leave anytime" desire (which I agree is real), the whole database can be exported as markdown or html from the root note. That could be wrapped up in a note-script and tied to a button, or executed from a host scheduled job using the external API at frequency one wants (for pythonistas see: https://github.com/Nriver/trilium-py?tab=readme-ov-file#-export-note).

For the "files are easier to organize, rearrange, reuse - esp. with other programs" desire. Yeah, true. For many years this was a personal main requirement for my knowledge base system. However after many years of working with notes-in-files using various systems I don't think so anymore. https://triliumnext.github.io/Docs/Wiki/faq.html#why-database-instead-of-flat-files touches on the Trilium features using a db supports which range from very difficult to impossible when using files.

@maphew Thanks for assuring mr that the migration is possible and quite easy.
I’ve stumbled upon a FAQ/a paragraph explaining why the author chose SQL database instead of markdown files and I get it (thus I really got used to the convenience of “plain folders with .md files”).

Funny coincidence- I currently struggle with grasping how ti use trilium-py (I have it installed and I’ve created ETAPI key but I have no idea wha am I supposed to do next as from trilium_py.client import ETAPI executed in terminal drops me an error that “from” command isn’t available) :0

I really want to give Trilium another try as it’s super nice to have it on a Raspberry Pi and being able to sync/connect from anywhere via web browser (instead of using a cloud provider to sync).

Heh, that 'from' error is because those lines in the trilium-py docs are Python code and not shell commands. You save them in my-script.py and then run in a shell with python my-script.py.

Unfortunately this info isn't immediately useful to you either: because the examples are generally snippets and not complete ready to run scripts. Anyway, this is far off topic and we should stop here. https://www.freecodecamp.org/ is an excellent resource for learning Python (and many other things) and will get you started.

@maphew Thanks again - your explanation was enough to point me in the right direction and I've successfully imported my Obsidian knowledge base (there are some kinks-and-quirks with pdfs/dags/.mp4's to fix but it's a minor issue).

I just created this .py file and it worked as intended:

I was also thinking of something similar. It would be nice if you could choose which note you want to pin instead of just typing the name of the new note you want to create. I think we have functionality in other dialogs which allow you to search for a notes name, and if the name is not found, it then let's you create the note with the given name.

@meichthys , currently the geomap only supports child notes, that's why I created it in the same pattern as the note map. In this case, how should we handle adding notes that are not subchildren?

Is there something technical blocking adding other notes to a geomap? Could we perhaps have an attribute on the geomap that shows included notes from anywhere in the trilium the document?

@meichthys , the geomap is made so that it reads the geolocation attribute of its child notes. You cannot add on the map notes that don't belong as children to the map itself since the map does not store a list of notes it should point to. It's the same pattern as used for the note map, and it's the Trilium way to handle things as far as I am aware.

As such, the map itself only stores the viewport (pan position) and zoom.

We will have in a v2 of the geomap a button similar to the global note map, which will show a map of all the notes having a geolocation attribute.

The alternative would have been to have the map store a list of notes that it displays, as well as the coordinates themselves. This is the way the relation map works.

For me the existing functionality is probably good enough since we can clone the note to be a child note of the geo-map note.
Your alternative is what i was envisioning, but again, i'm not sure how much that really adds in terms of functionality since we have cloning already.
