This is more of a "nice to have" feature than anything else. In Microsoft Word you can navigate the cursor to the middle of a word, and press the Bold, Underline, Italic shortcut to change the whole word. It's not something I see emulated much in other software but it's a small QOL thing that is super nice to have for people who like it.
