Several problems with generic ESP32

Hi

I flashed the firmware on a generic ESP32 and it runs but there are a two problems:

1. Unable to update firmware with OTA, neither with clicking the upgrade link or uploading the firmware manually

• OTA upgrade from a patch version does not work, for some technical reason that @gskjold can surely explain. Upgrade manually.
• Price fetch issue: Strange. Did you try a reboot?

Yes, rebooted after configuring it and have left in running for ~12 hours now without updates

What URL are the prices fetched from? Perhaps it is blocked for some reason.

Prices are fetched from our server, it would be strange if it is blocked on your side.

I flashed ams2mqtt-esp32-2.5.0-rc2 like so:

python -m esptool --chip esp32 --port /dev/ttyUSB1 --baud 460800 --before default_reset --after
 hard_reset write_flash -z --flash_mode dio --flash_freq 40m --flash_size detect 0x1000 bootloader.bin 0x8000 partitions
.bin 0xe000 boot_app0.bin 0x10000 firmware.bin

Now I have prices but it still says there's a new version and I still can't upgrade it with OTA. Is there a way to flash it such that OTA will work going forward?

Absolutely. It is just your patch version that does not accept OTA. Download the binary from https://github.com/UtilitechAS/amsreader-firmware/releases and upload it manually, using this button on the status/info page:

You only need the *.bin file for esp32.

Reasonably, downloaded the .zip for 2.5.0-rc2 and flashed it like above.

It was actually rc1 I flashed but still, should then be able to upgrade via the GUI?

I was able to upgrade to 2.5.0-rc3 via USB:

And it now shows the release instead of the patch version or tag or whatever so hopefully I can upgrade it without having to take it down the next time. Thanks!

Been like this since sometime during the night. Tried reboot and power cycle to no avail, so it is likely the HAN port needs to be reset again?

Depends on what the problem is, I don't know your hardware. Is the firmware configured to read the correct GPIO pin?

It has been running fine for a couple days, so yes. It stopped seemingly for no reason last night around 0100. I checked the cables this morning, all looked fine.

I assume you're not trying to power your ESP32 from the meter?
