Smart PhD Lab 5.0

A digital platform supporting project-based doctoral education at the University of Telecommunications and Posts (UTP) in Sofia, Bulgaria, developed as part of an EU-funded initiative under the Education 2021-2027 program co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+).

What is Smart PhD Lab 5.0?

Smart PhD Lab 5.0 is a centralized ecosystem designed to modernize and streamline the management of PhD programs across three partner universities:

  • University of Telecommunications and Posts (UTP) — Sofia
  • Mining and Geology University "St. Ivan Rilski"
  • Technical University — Varna

The platform bridges academic administration, student progress tracking, and public communication — bringing together supervisors, doctoral students, and administrators in one place.

Why It Exists

PhD programs are complex to manage: students juggle courses across platforms, supervisors track individual development plans, and institutions need to communicate program information to prospective and current participants. Smart PhD Lab 5.0 solves this by unifying these scattered workflows into a single, accessible platform aligned with:

  • Industry 5.0 standards
  • Green transition goals
  • Smart Specialization Strategy (TSSS) 2021–2027
  • Regional labor market needs

Who It's For

Role What they can do
PhD Students Access enrolled courses, view their individual PhD plan, and get AI-powered insights into their academic progress
Supervisors / Teachers Manage supervised students, upload and track individual PhD plans, and control course visibility
Lab Administrators Manage users and roles, publish news and events, oversee publications, and configure the platform
Public visitors Learn about the project, PhD specialties, partner universities, and access law documents and scientific databases

PhD Specialties

The platform covers four doctoral specialties:

  1. Theoretical Foundations of Communication Engineering (TFCT) — mathematics, signal theory, information and coding theory, transmission systems
  2. Industrial Engineering (IE) — production systems, operations research, quality management, lean manufacturing, Industry 4.0
  3. Information Technologies, Communication Networks and Cybersecurity (ITNC) — network design, wireless and optical systems, cloud computing, cryptography, cybersecurity
  4. Operations Management & Technology Planning (OMTP) — planning and management of technology-driven operations

  • Student dashboard with course overview and AI-generated performance analysis
  • Supervisor tools for uploading and managing individual PhD plans
  • Admin panel for news, events, publications, and user management
  • Public information pages about the project, specialties, documents, and contact
  • Bilingual interface (English and Bulgarian)
  • Social sharing of news and events to Facebook and LinkedIn
  • Live stream integration for broadcasts and academic events

Project Scope

This platform was created as part of the project "Support for the Development of Project-Based PhD Programs", aiming to:

  • Introduce innovative, interdisciplinary doctoral education models
  • Align PhD training with real-world industry and sustainability challenges
  • Support up to 450+ doctoral students across the three partner institutions
  • Foster collaboration between academia, industry, and public institutions
