Symptoms
For the last few weeks, the game would occasionally freeze within ~5 minutes of launching it, no matter whether I was idling or menuing or actually playing the game. I've never been able to figure out the cause of it, and it used to fix itself out of nowhere. For the last few days, it's been unplayable on my Linux PC (and seems to consistently freeze within seconds as opposed to minutes when I added the Proton log command to the launch options).
No update (either of the game itself or of my PC, including at least one kernel update) seems to have caused or resolved this, resource monitoring has showed nothing obvious, it occurs regardless of other programs running, searching around online for similar symptoms has turned up zilch, and neither verifying the game files nor uninstalling and reinstalling has managed to fix this (among other things I've tried). None of my other games have this issue. It used to work flawlessly, even while streaming to Discord or through OBS, and it works on my Windows 10 laptop. Best I've managed to do is change the Proton version to 9.0-4 and prevent a freeze for a few minutes, but the app froze as soon as I tried sharing my screen over Discord to test what it'd do. (Note that this is far from the only situation in which it freezes.)
When it freezes, the audio continues, but the game window is no longer entirely possible to interact with. The cursor disappears over it and I can't select anything in the error message dialog box thing, and I have to stop the process via the Steam client to close it.
