ViewComponent is not loaded

Hi all, I am following the Getting Started chapter in the guide and I quickly ran into the following three problems:

1. bin/rails generate view_component:component does not seem to exist, but bin/rails generate component does. Is the documentation up-to-date, or does this indicate a problem with my setup?
2. My example_component.rb file does not contain template code, instead I put the <span> in example_component.html.erb. Again, is the documentation up-to-date, or does this indicate an issue in my setup?
3. When rendering the component, I receive the following error: uninitialized constant #<Class:0x...>::ExampleComponent, see the screenshot below. It seems the component isn't loaded in my project? I haven't been able to find anything about this in the docs, so far. How should I fix this? And is it possible without eager loading? (due to performance concerns)

Sidenote, adding require "view_component" to config/application.rb did not resolve it, either, as per issue 1972

• Ruby 3.4.4
• Rails 8.0.2
• view_component 3.23.2

try restarting your rails server, zeitwerk only loads libraries at boot time

1. Your report says you're on 3.23.2. The docs site is for 4.0.0.rc2, which changes the generator API as you've described.
2. Correct, your template code goes in the template file, not the Ruby file.
3. I think @reeganviljoen is right here, did that work?

1. I did notice that, but I found no way to get the docs for v.3.23.2 / the stable version. Where could I find the docs for the current stable version?

4.0.0.rc2 is considered a stable release, which is why the docs site reflects that version. If you want to read the docs for a specific release, you can check out the git tag for that release and look in the docs folder ❤️

Strange, when I used bundle add view_component it considered ~> 3.23.2 to be the latest stable. Also, the version number (with RC in it) made me think it was not a stable release.

Either way, I found the docs, thank you very much!

@Fonzie-byte oh shoot, that's good to know! I wonder if that means Dependabot is also not upgrading folks automatically 🤔
