Wifi

  • Managed by the library.
  • No access to the routers. Nothing to reboot.
  • Access point: “Lib WiFi” (there are several with that name). password: “get-reading” (advertised on the side of the router box near the projector screen).
    • Laptops should be already set up to go for this.
    • When WiFi is spotty, it's worth getting some laptops to use the access point with "fewer bars" to avoid crowding the ones with most.

Presentation screen

  • To turn on, ensure it’s plugged in (sockets next to fire exit).
  • For each laptop:
    • If it's got the "Mirror screen" icon on the Desktop, double click it.
    • Otherwise, manual mirroring:
      • VGA cable (in the black box with laptops, or perhaps the clear one with cables)
      • Go to the applications menu
      • Configuration (or Settings?) > Displays (or Screens?) > Check the box for VGA screen > Apply > OK > Save > OK
      • Sometimes it takes up to 30 seconds to pick up.
      • When done, just pull out the VGA cable and repeat with the next laptop.
      • Give it a go before show&tell, and see if you can get one to work.
      • If you can’t get it to work, just get them to demo on their laptops.

Laptop troubleshooting

Many laptops have a WiFi hardware switch. If a laptop can't see any networks, just check if there’s a switch somewhere. Most times it's on one of the edges, but sometimes it's a button (which doesn't always look like a button). They are easy to spot. If not, just use a different laptop.

Otherwise, if a laptop is giving you trouble just swap it. Most of the time, it’s a case of reinstalling.

Setting up camp

  • We don't have keys. If you arrive before the general public, the back office door may be closed. Library staff will eventually open it. Just use the time to set up chairs&desks instead
  • If you can, be there 10:30 (not later) and tailgate library staff, as they may not open for you before 11 otherwise.
  • They may not recognise you, so just say you are running the workshop that day, filling in for the Spanish guy with long hair.
  • If you can’t make early enough to tailgate library staff, just wait outside until open for the general public at 11. Fortunately, not all kids arrive at once.
