Just noticed FVWM is also the OpenBSD default WM, I didn't noticed it before because it looks quite different in your setup. I am surprise that you can customize like this, great!

It is an advantage of FVWM that it allows to do almost anything (maybe except real transparency for all windows, not only for menus), but sometimes patching is necessary (the team is not so big, and the developers are not necessarily focused on things that You need the most).

(Logo which by the way is a "banned symbol" under Austrian law.) I am pretty sure that that particular political organization would not want their lambda in rainbow colors.

but Linux Mint is Ubuntu based and while Ubuntu is debian based, it has it's difference. So linux mint is not debian based but Ubuntu LTS based.

It wasn't too bad. I just cloned the repo and installed the dependencies given by menson and installed the dev versions so they'd have the appropriate c headers. Most installed without any issues from apt, but some needed to be hunted down.

I compiled drm and xorgproto from source. Not sure if that's strictly required, but was easiest since the versions didn't line up from apt.

Then you can launch it by either just running the build directly or moving to PATH and running startx.

You can use some commands like xdpyinfo |grep -B1 'vendor string:' or Xorg -version to show that your screen is truly liberated!

I am actually using old Nvidia hardware so I have to use proprietary driver. I have to enable ignoreABI true in xorg.conf, instruction described here.

You can also see Graphics devices & drivers for compatibility of different devices.

I think for Nvidia it only affect old GPU, because new GPU can use the open driver. But I am not sure.

Hey Thanks,
I'm using dwmblocks-async which allow you to have a clickable status bar in dwm, for the media control block I'm just using a shell script with playerctl :)

The issue with the nvidia driver is, the maintainer of the RPM Fusion package insists on strict ABI version dependencies and is unwilling to relax those: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/f43-change-proposal-x11libre-system-wide/156330/4. And I cannot ship the nvidia driver in the Copr because of Copr policies allowing only FOSS to be shipped.

is there is a alternative to get xlibre working on nvidia driver on nvidia or arch (my main) is the only way ?

I suppose you could either just run the upstream installer script (with the drawback that this bypasses the packaging system and may even overwrite packaged libraries in place, which breaks the next time the Fedora package shipping that library is updated) or extract the akmod-nvidia SRPM, modify the specfile to work with XLibre, and build the result (the proper way, but you need to know the basics of RPM packaging).

And in case you wondered how I managed to make those windows so small (below the normal minimum size), KWin allows you to manually override the minimum size requested by the application (right-click the title bar, "More Actions", "Configure Special Window Settings…", "Add Property…", "Minimum Size", "Force", then set whatever you want there, e.g., 640 × 32).

Haven't seen Trinity Desktop yet. I am kinda old school with desktops, though TDE has some basic tiling support. Also witness Amarok in it's qt3 glory. The window decorations are from IceWM, which can be used in TDE. I also managed to have a somewhat consistent desktop style throughout tqt3 - qt5 - qt6 with qtcurve.

That's diversity, and it gives us all freedom of choice. The very heart of FOSS.

At the end of the day, the user base is what drives the software. You can push XYZ out all you want, but when the crowd says, we want ABC back, and you tell them no, when developer 123 says, "I forked ABC and made ABC+. It's just like ABC, but with new developers" those same users are going to go to ABC+ and XYZ is going to go stagnant with users even if development continues. The problems will arise when nobody starts developing new software for XYZ and usage reports dry up.

Then another problem for XYZ is when those same users are going to then tell their friends online "hey the ABC+ developer is willing to work with people", and that's when even supporters and contributions will dry up.

Then all you have left is a pet project used by nobody.

Yes it is, and it has always been. Today, Red Hat simply can't bother to pretend it isn't.

Most x11 devs gave up on the thought of trying to close the countless vulnerabilities present, thus Wayland development kicked into high gear.

Theoretically speaking, a robust X11 sandbox mechanism is all you need to address most, if not all, security issue.

It has come too far to warrant wasting all the time spent on cultivating it.

That's exactly what Red Hat wants you to think. It's a technique called "scheduled obsolescence".

Don't have the intention to kill the others (like I previously said "needs to die"), but be on guard against them, especially when it comes to Wayland.

I wouldn't personally call it scheduled obsolescence since there is no definitive date or time in which x11 would have been left behind in its entirety, never to be used again. If anything it was pending obsolescence. It is not the same situation, as the case with DOS was, which was in fact, killed. Heck, it wasn't even until this year that DOS was made opensource, doubtful anyone is interested in resurrecting it in a meaningful way. Either way, what you think the situation should be called differs from what I think it should be called, it matters little, what matters is where we go from here.

I tried it about 2 years ago and found that I have to explore a lot of toolkit which is troublesome.
But the deal breaker is the animation slowed me down a lot. I prefer no animation after I tried that.
I think I can disable hyprland animation, but it just make no sense.

I want to retain control of my computer.

To do that I must understand exactly what it is doing. That means I must make it as simple as possible, so I have removed everything which is not providing functionality I actually need to use.

Those packages add extreme complexity, especially as they interact with each other in ways none of their authors could have imagined. (the "three body" problem)

I'm always looking for more processes to terminate, and just recently removed xf86-video-intel in favor of the modesetting, for no reason other than to remove more running code and complexity.

There are still things running that are too complex for me to fully understand yet, but only one or two of them ever has root privilege.

I'm sure you do. Having control, and retaining control are separate issues. When I ran an ISP, I was a target, and developed specific defensive strategies, at specific cost.

Have you ever tried to break in to your own systems? Have you ever looked for evidence that someone else was trying to break in to your own systems?

What I do is not for everyone.

On a related note: Gentoo... is not for everyone.

@callmetango: I had to git clone, and ./Meta/ladybird.py run. That left a binary at ./Build/release/bin/Ladybird... and attempted to run it.

As I have no "seat", it promply crashed. ltrace showed it was trying to write to /run/user/1000/, so I created that, and viola, it ran.

Subsequently, I've tried to use it in the stead of badwolf, for cases where I wish to give a site temporary "carte blanche" access to javascript, but I have had it crash on complex sites like Meta (unavailable to me anyway as I have no account).

I still use it though.... by forwarding links to it from my "daily" waterfox by way of the runwith addon (as I do for badwolf)

Two independent seats, integrated Intel (TV) + discrete nVidia GTX 560 (two monitors). Open i915+modesetting drivers peacefully coexist with proprietary nVidia v.390.157.

Observe a little cheating with X.org server version, this is built in to make greedy capitalists happy :) No configuration needed for nVidia, it just works.

Slackware-current as of 25.08.2025, 6.12.6 kernel, xlibre-xserver-25.0.0.9, FVWM-1.1.3.

First Microsoft Word 2007 on XLibre ever ;)

NVidia GTX 760, proprietary driver v. 470, no xorg.conf or other configuration (apart from keyboard layout) was necessary.

Slackware-current 25.08.2025, 6.14.0 kernel, xlibre-xserver-25.0.0.9, FVWM-1.1.3, Wine-10.5 WoW.

how did you get office running on linux ? do only old version work ?

MS Office 2007 SP3 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) covers my needs and works stably under Wine, so I just haven't tried newer versions. I saw reports that they have issues with Wine, for example, MS Office 2010 Installer is rated as "Garbage" with a recent Wine 9.12, MS Office 2013 and MS Office 2016 Installers work on older Wines (6 or 7) and have not been tested on Wine 9.

So I feel comfortable with Office 2007 (have not encountered a file that cannot be normally open and edited).

Installation is simple (although slow, Wine implementation is not complete), I just run setup.exe from Enterprise MS Office Edition ISO. It already contains SP1 and SP2, I needed only to install SP3 manually, then ran FileFormatConverters.exe, and patiently waited ;)

Some preparations with Winetricks are necessary beforehand, but it is definitely not a place here to go into details, maybe in another topic, but it is more specific to Wine than to XLibre. All this wisdom I have googled in the net ))

UPD: Well, I'll take the risk ;) Wine, cabextract, and winetricks should be installed, and (under a common user, not root)

No need for this, everything I was asked for is already here :) I promise not to break rules anymore, just want to say that MS Offfice 2007 is 32 bit only, Wine is "Windows on Windows", that is multilib, so this example proves that XLibre needs no 32 bit components to work on a multilib system.

wine 10 can but it is in experimental mode and you have to disabled xwayland and build it with a flag to enable wayland support

You can use NetBSD as a router, but NetBSD is primarily a completely independent BSD operating system that can use the X11 server, like Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD and DragonFlyBSD.
