I've started an X thing (only tangentially related to XLibre)

While the main goal for it is to develop a minimalistic, usable app launcher for TWM, the other two goals is for me to finally learn C (because I can't C well) and learn the inner workings of X11 so that hopefully in the future I can contribute to XLibre if I think I can do something of use.

Oh that's pretty cool, that would be a fun project. What kind of layout were you thinking for the start menu, if it's tile based like Windows 8 it could be good for HTPCs or basic tablets

I was thinking of a simple menu on the side of the screen. The entries would be paginated, and the traversal through it would remind going through "index of" pages Apache can generate for directories on a webserver that don't have index file. I'll try to make some mockup tomorrow. Also I've made discussions available on the TuWiM repo, so we can talk more there.

And there's Pascal, the best language in the entire universe.
All revolutionary applications were first written in Pascal (Mac OS, Skype, Photoshop, and many others).
There's the Free Pascal Compiler (fpc) with plenty of OS targets.

I know, but I already know and like Pascal. This is more so I can finally learn C and help on Xlibre proper in the future. If the goal was "just" to make it, I'd probably go with Pascal. But using Pascal won't get me closer to helping on with Xlibre, now would it?

If you know Pascal, it'll be easy to learn C (many things were borrowed from Pascal logic).
But yes, I admit it, C has taken over (and it's sad).

Not so easy though, considering I've learned Pascal when I was 8 and couldn't learn C/C++ until recently (I've just became 35 on July 27th) due to pointer hell. Thankfully several videos and LLMs* helped me understand it

*I don't use LLMs to generate code, just to explain stuff to me that I don't understand.

It's great that you learned Pascal so young.
I'm from another generation, and my first love was the Delphi project, a Pascal GUI IDE. Then I learned C, like everyone else. But a few years ago, I returned to my first love, Pascal.
Speaking of pointer hell, Pascal Object uses it too.

Interesting idea.
You might want to look into the IceWM's menu UI it is nice and simple, I personally like how it scrolls under your cursor.

Did some code cleanups so I won't end up with million line main function, as well as added first pieces of ensuring TuWiM is only ran in a correct environment (X11).

By the way, it would be nice from XLibre social media team to post about this project to show people that new X11 software is still being developed and in pure Xlib no less.
