We need an umbrella organization for our efforts, similar in scope (but not in the way it's being run) to Freedesktop #300

would that require building a funding source like a donation system? |

This sounds a bit overboard and redundant at this stage. Unless you have plans to expand the BSD community user base substantially, I see little upside to creating an organization. It requires having major backers and influence behind it. |

Describe the idea
An umbrella organization to handle all related efforts, not just xlibre, similar in scope to Freedesktop. We could call it Libredesktop.
It should be done because
It would help standardize the new X11 development efforts and related stuff (such as supporting X11-only or X11-first desktop environments and window managers). Unlike Freedesktop, however, we need to make sure that it cannot be overtaken, with strict democratic processes to avoid corporate takeover. Each contributor should get exactly 1 vote on things and any employees of a single company would be considered as a single contributor (the company), so that no company could get control by simply throwing more employees in.
What are the alternatives?
