A different name for the project #328

Thank you for your idea! I think that it is way to late for this and maybe not even applicable. The XLibre brand is on the one hand quite sound for the project given the libre = free aspect. This is in tradition of XFree86 - Wikipedia. The aspect of liberation also plays a role here. And this remains in our and the peoples memory when one looks back into the history of the XLibre project. On the other hand there are not already domains registered, but also a logo in the making, social media as well as chat channels created, numerous articles written, ... They all reference one name: XLibre. The chances and interest in changing this are likely to be very low. |

(Please wait until Metux reads this, before jumping to anything.)
I’d like to propose a change, which would provide a slight temporary inconvenience for the beta, but could help provide a more compelling and whimsical appeal; Xphoenix, which is understood in the context of a timeline. The Xorg team had reorganized under a new project following the broken promise of the BDFL, and this fork rose from the ashes of the seemingly certain end. I ran the idea briefly by some, and Joseph Crowell said he recalled this particular name in association with another fork, but after some searching I could find no evidence of it ever having existed. While I merely threw an idea at the wall, the name has some interesting initially unintended symbolism. Since it both begins and ends with an X, further exemplifying the notion of resurrection, vitality, and perseverance.
Not sure what Metux thinks about renaming the project, especially since the appropriate domains have already been acquired for Xlibre. While there is the purely technical side of things, this is also an angle to think about. But if the idea is entertained, it’d delay the logo since most of our ideas would need to be redrawn, but comparatively the latter would be a much lower priority issue anyway since it would be much less disruptive regardless when finalized. And I obviously don’t mean to offend Metux personally by the suggestion.
