I tend to agree with both.
So I think this project needs to put tests in place that ensure compatibility with Nvidia does not break.
If I was Nvidia, I'd not bother to test against two X11 implementations. So as long as upstream is still "alive", it is reasonable to assume that they will test their drivers (only) against that and not some new fork. This might change over time (think LibreOffice vs. OpenOffice), but for the time being, that's how it is.
Hence, this project needs a robust plan how to test each release for Nvidia binary compatibility. Against all the various Nvidia driver version families.
Right now I don't know how to do this, but that's the beauty of the community - someone usually knows how to do things.
