YouTube is trying to block every download (there are differents Tools which are updating continously because they change the way to releals the links to download the stream, some tools get only the 360p resolution, others nothing and the VideoHelper with Firerox/Mozilla is the only one that works so far, has yet a little isuue, but I hope that will be solved quicly. |

I can't access that video because it is restricted to members of the channel. However, there is a long-standing issue with YouTube content that requires a login. Perhaps your case is in this other category. Worse, it may be a victim of both the login problem and the other problem that seems to be spreading slowly. Maybe Paul can figure that out. |

For what it's worth, on Windows 11 Pro 64-bit version 23H2 build 22631.3958, Firefox 128.0.3 64-bit, licensed VDH 9.1.0.41 beta, CoApp 2.0.19, VDH is able to download this video for me without a problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYOVTtfGhDk It was just released a couple of hours ago. If there is something being rolled out across the YouTube Network, it is taking much longer to reach me than other similar events in the past. |

While connected through my VPN provider, I can't download any video from Youtube (video not detected). When switching off the VPN, I can download all videos. Might Youtube be doing something nasty in the background when they detect a VPN? |

I had the same problem using VDH on Firefox with ExpressVPN. I switched from my default Atlanta server to Washington D.C. and now VDH detects and can download the videos. |

I do not use a VPN so I figured this did not apply to me. Then I remembered I am using an Ad Blocker. I turned it off and reloaded the page. No dice, it still does not show up with video. |

This is the video I downloaded.
Aside from the fact that the subject does not interest me, there is no way I'm sitting here watching a 3-hour video. I just skimmed it to make sure it was all here, with audio. It was. The video goes to completely black at about 40 minutes in. I gather this is intentional. There are credits at the very end so I don't think over 2 hours of completely black video is evidence of a damaged video. As I suggested above, did you check this video with the URL I posted above in my comment dated August 24? |

I have asked for help twice. The first time I got smarmy answers from whoever answered. The second time went unanswered. I have been having issues getting Video Download Helper to even open up in You Tube much less do anything. This has been going on since I reloaded Windows in January. I am running version 9.5.0.2 but have gotten all the updates without issue. I assume it is not recognizing a video is running. How can I get this fixed because this has me ready to tear my hair out. Any positive assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have had this program for well over 10 years. It has been paid for since then. I had hoped I would never have a problem, but since I have, my disappointment in any support has been abysmal. Please get me back on the road to downloading my videos. Thank you... |

This YouTube issue is making me crazy & I'm not even experiencing any problems. VDH 9.5.0.2 general availability version on Firefox always works for me. That doesn't help anybody else but that's the truth. I try to help whenever I can & this situation is in my way. I have searched the web looking for an explanation of YouTube's blocking policy. YouTube has a blocking policy. It is mentioned in plenty of places. But I have yet to find somewhere that explains, "If you download x videos, or x Meg/Gig of data, we will block you for y minutes/hours/days." Numbers. I can't find numbers anywhere. Maybe you can. I invite you & everybody to do the web searches. See if you can find an explanation of the YouTube blocking policy that is NOT filled with weasel words. I have failed. Maybe you'll have better luck. If you do find a clear explanation with hard numbers, do be sure to post that URL here. We will all thank you. There is some sort of blocking that YouTube applies if you download too much, that ill-defined amount, too much. And we don't know how long the block lasts. They block your IP address. In another discussion here, we talked at length about how to change your IP address. (You can search for that one here in this forum.) It turns out that's a really difficult thing to do. Pretty much all ISPs use what is called DHCP to assign you your IP address. There's another web search that would be educational. Read up on DHCP. There is a strongly built-in bias in DHCP to give you back the same IP address you've had for a while. Rebooting your computer & rebooting your Internet hardware (modem, router, whatever you have) do not seem to be enough. Various combinations of parameters on the ipconfig command aren't enough. You are stuck with your IP address, so YouTube blocking your IP address is pretty much impossible to circumvent. People have tried incognito browsing with mixed results. People have tried using a VPN, but that only postpones the moment when you'll get blocked. People have tried deleting YouTube cookies. This seems to work more or less. But people who download a lot (again, "a lot" is not clearly defined) still get blocked again. I assume clearing the cookies again would get you another few steps forward. I don't work for VDH. I don't have my hands on the code. I doubt I would understand it anyway. But my speculation is that VDH can't do anything about this. YouTube detects downloads as distinct from simply playing back content on their web site. That is why downloads get blocked even though you can continue to play the videos . . . and suffer through the interminable ads . . . unless you have uBlock Origin or something similar, which does seem to work well enough. I think playing the ads is the key to this issue. They want you to be subjected to the ads. That's why they don't like downloaders & that's why every few months VDH has a seizure until Paul figures out what it is this time & comes up with a way around it. The YouTube gnomes are always thinking up ways to thwart the downloaders. We're just the victims. But this does not seem to be simply yet another frivolous change at YouTube that is interfering with VDH. It's working for me. That means there's nothing VDH has to do to continue to work. The problem is this IP blocking. My belief is that VDH is just a victim here, that there is nothing VDH can do to get around YouTube blocking your IP address. Yes this is frustrating. No you're not going to get good help here because the problem is not in VDH. At least, I don't think it is. Maybe Paul has something up his sleeve. I don't know. There was a VDH 10 for Edge released a while ago. One would hope there's a VDH 10 for Firefox & Chrome coming soon. Maybe it's got a solution, which would surprise me, but I'd be the first to applaud me being wrong about this. But for the moment, I don't see any way around this blocking policy that YouTube is using. Maybe you should find something else to do besides downloading from YouTube. I don't know. I don't have any answers. |

Since I started using the VDH beta version 9.5.0.0, I haven’t had any issues.
I’m running macOS Sequoia 15.6.1 and use the latest versions of Firefox for Video Download Helper.

No, don't give it a try. Historically, the VDH beta for Firefox has been newer than the general availability version. But this is not true now. It no doubt will be true at some future time. But today, the general availability version is the latest. If you have it, don't get rid of it. |

I was always reluctant about using a beta version of anything, and the beta version of VDH was the first beta version I ever used.

VDH betas have pretty much always been solid. They are not like what you'll find with other software. Other software will issue a beta because it is known to be full of bugs & the author wants users to hit the bugs so he can solve them. That has not been the case with VDH. VDH betas have simply offered early access to bug resolutions that will ultimately end up in the general availability version. I have been using VDH for the relatively short period of about 8 years. I have almost never used anything other than the betas. At the moment, we have the anomaly that the beta is out of date, that the general availability version is the latest. Nobody should be running the beta . . . today. That will surely not be true forever. Another beta will come along & that's the one you should run then. But for the time being, the general availability version is the one everybody should be running today. |

The reason for betas is that Mozilla has a rigorous vetting policy. At least, they think it's rigorous. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, I'm not an insider. Whatever the case, when a new general availability version of VDH is submitted to Mozilla, it regularly takes them a week or longer before they stick a fork in it & declare it done. Only then will they let it escape to their add-ons repository. Betas are a different animal. They can be hosted on the VDH web site & they can be made available with no delays. That's why we've always had a string of betas between general availability releases. It was just a way for us to get our hands on known resolutions of problems we've reported without having to wait for Mozilla to get around to approving an official release. I can think of only 1 time in all the years I've used VDH betas when the beta was impossible to use & I had to go back to the previous one. That was several years ago. Everybody should get over any beta anxiety you might have. Jump on the betas whenever they appear. Just not today. But in the future. |

Another possibility is YouTube blocked your IP address & then lifted the block. I don't know how to detect that block. We're all groping around in the dark. You can fit any number of explanations to the observations. All we know is downloading succeeds intermittently. I believe clearing cache has no impact. You can get the effect of clearing cache by reloading the web page with Ctrl+F5 instead of just F5 alone. Clearing cookies is more likely to have an effect. More likely. Not guaranteed. Just a better chance. As a probably unhelpful aside, I downloaded the 2 tennis videos without incident. I got an English audio track in both cases. This is no surprise. There is no list of alternative language dubs on either video, just the original language track & that happens to be English in both cases. |

Nope...not the issue and opening and closing browser does not fix for me.
The app is there and not grayed out but does not open at all.

toolbar was responding except for the Firefox menu
button. I think it was that the toolbar froze up. Closing and reopening

It is my understanding that YouTube is able to distinguish between simple playback & download. That's why you can play stuff that won't download. Others have reported this in this forum. I believe I've read this online elsewhere as well. |

One thing I don't understand about the videos that have more than one language. If I download it with the original language, the downloaded vidoe has a different one. In my case usually is the German even if I've chose the English. |

It's a bug in VDH. If you follow the approach in #1707, you can get what you want in whatever language you want. VDH isn't taking that approach . . . yet. |

Yo, at this point I think we need an official reply by an official developer as to why this keeps happening then not happening then happening again. Especially since developers is actually developer. Singular. There is only one developer & that is @paulrouget Paul. I'm kind of ambivalent about this. On the one hand, as the sole developer, he certainly has enough to fill his time trying to react to YouTube's usually frivolous and, in my opinion, intentional changes meant to make life difficult for downloading software. On the other hand, there is a public relations component to his job & his absence here does tend to allow for the natives to get rather riled up. This issue with YouTube has been going on for months. Surely he could spare the time to make one pronouncement here. After all, he is the one who launched this thread. |

Really? I know lots of other people are having problems but my VDH 9.5.0.2 on Firefox downloads just fine from YouTube. I've downloaded some things other users have reported just in the past couple of days. You can see the discussions in here. I totally appreciate extra effort to make VDH work better, not just on YouTube but everywhere. But honestly, I'm not seeing whatever it is they've changed as causing a problem. Besides, I've been saying the problem isn't with VDH anyway. I've been saying people are just getting blocked because they're downloading too much. Are you saying Paul has figured out a way to avoid the IP blocking? Why can't he come in here & explain things himself? Is 5 minutes too much to ask? |

Yes. Exactly. YouTube does not block IP addresses for playback on their web site. They block IP addresses only for downloads. YouTube is able to distinguish between playback & download. They let playback through; they block downloads. You are jumping to a faulty conclusion. It's not a blanket IP block; it's a selective IP block. The block applies only for downloads, not playback. If it were truly a blanket IP block, you would get 404 not found on EVERY YouTube page. You're not getting that, are you? So face the fact that things will play but they won't download. |

What's the source for that info, of youtube distinguishing between playing and downloading? Again, they would block downloading for every video, for everyone, if they could. Why don't they? I'm not a tech expert, but like you just trying to understand. I'm sure Paul could clear this up in a minute. But unless/until he does, I decided to ask Claude AI, and asked if this was accurate (I'm not trying to get into an argumen, merely trying to be accurate). Here was the reply: "You're making some technical distinctions that aren't quite accurate. Let me clarify how YouTube's blocking actually works: Legitimate requests from browsers/apps with proper headers, user agents, and authentication tokens When YouTube blocks an IP address, it's typically because: The IP is associated with excessive automated requests A blocked IP would indeed affect all YouTube access from that address, not just certain types of requests. The 404 error you mentioned wouldn't necessarily appear on every page - YouTube uses various response codes and blocking methods depending on the specific violation detected. I then asked for sources, and it acknowledged that it couldn't find definitive info on how youtube blocks. That it was doing what AI often does: it amalgamates knowledge from various sources. I don't know the internals of VDH. But I have used ffmpeg some. That's relevant because the download engine inside VDH is ffmpeg. Ffmpeg has a parameter for transmitting a user agent. If you just insert the Firefox user agent string into that, then ffmpeg looks like Firefox. As long as YouTube doesn't see massive amounts of data being shoveled into a particular IP, it flies under the radar. Like it says in your results, they have to balance between letting the site work & protecting against large scale piracy. People who do what I do, download something every few days, don't get spanked. Somebody who downloads 50 videos at a time, & does that a few times every day, is going to get spanked. That will happen even if the content is not copyrighted or protected by DRM. Most stuff reported in here is non-copyrighted, general interest stuff. It isn't the sort of thing that people are going to redistribute for a profit. I think there's too much paranoia about this redistributing piracy thing. Decades ago the issue of being able to record your TV shows for time shifting was decided, & the upshot was the VCR. The analogous thing does not appear to have happened yet on the Internet. If you can't download something, you can always use a screen recorder to make a copy. There's nothing they can do about that. YouTube just wants to let monetizers monetize their content. They also want to shove their ads in your face. But there are so many ways to get around that. It's always going to be a struggle between people who want to just watch stuff & the suppliers who want to treat viewers like a commodity they deliver to their advertisers. I get my information from web searches, same as what you did. Maybe I misinterpreted a few details. I've read a few times how YouTube has a policy that you're not allowed to download stuff unless you log in as a premium user. All I know is VDH has always downloaded from YouTube for as long as I've been using it, which is about 8 years now. And I am pretty much never logged in on YouTube. VDH must be doing something to avoid being flagged as a criminal application. What that is I don't know. I just get my couple of things a week & go away happy. |
