Cannot DL Beta

I found where it said the Beta might help the YT download issue. But when I try to DL Beta, nothing happens and my firefox plugins still say I have the normal version. No change on reboot/restart,

Do we have an answer to this? I've tried Save Link As, direct clicked link and it gave me the "thinking" icon like something was happening, but then nothing, I tried to Open the Link, etc.

Do I have to be in some developer environment? I would've thought I could have at least of download the .XPI file, but I couldn't even do that.

Nope, not crazy. None of the standard "no-brainer" approaches worked for me either, so try this, because it worked for me after.

1. go to the three lines in the upper right
2. near the bottom you will see More Tools, in there, click on Web Developer Tools or use the shortcut CTRL+Shift+I
3. go back to the Install Beta for Firefox button and try it again, and it should work... at least, it did for me. You'll know it from the pop-up that refused to open the last time you tried... it could also potentially be an active Popup Blocker on your system stopping it

Guys you just click on it and there should be a prompt top right of Firefox to install it. You could also use save link as to download
the file, drag and drop it anywhere on a new tab to install.

I do not work for VDH. I'm just another user.

This is how it looks on my system.

The download of the XPI file should take just a couple of seconds. Once that's complete, go to that directory & just execute the file. Double click it, or select it & hit Enter. That's supposed to launch the Firefox dialog for installing VDH.

Is this not what you see on your system? If not, show us what you get when you perform these steps. Post screenshots, like I just did.

You shouldn't have to open the Developer Tools. If that's what made it work for you, that's a really weird thing. I couldn't explain that.

Can't explain it either, but again; it worked for me. Got it downloaded and unpacked. However, cannot find an executable for the beta.

Where it should be, I have a manifest.json.

You're not supposed to find an executable. It's a browser extension. The code is buried somewhere in the Firefox directories. When you "execute" the XPI file, it does all the magic stuff that makes it possible for Firefox to execute the extension. You're trying to be too interventionist, too do-it-yourself-ist. Browser extensions are not amenable to such an approach. Let the browser run the XPI & stop trying to figure it out yourself.

There is an executable but it's not the VDH browser extension. It's the Companion Application, the CoApp. That is distributed separately in a .exe file. You can find it in our Wiki, near where you can find the browser extension. But the CoApp installer is the only thing you execute yourself. The installer. Only the installer. Once you have run the installer, you never personally execute any .exe after that. The VDH browser extension executes the CoApp as needed. The CoApp is not meant to be a user-executable item. It is a slave process that runs in connection with the browser extension. You might want to read #744 for more background.

I had the same problem BUT on MacOS w Firefox.
You have to download the XPI beta file...I couldn't just double-click XPI file as FIREFOX is NOT my DEFAULT BROWSER.
You may have EDGE or CHROME as default on Windows.

Simply OPEN FIREFOX browser, select FILE OPEN, select BETA .XPI file, and follow the prompts shown...
It incorrectly. shows BETA 9.1 but it is 9.3

The problem you describe, that the context menu does not pop up on the button on the Wiki page, sounds like some kind of Firefox problem, not a VDH problem. I don't know why you wouldn't get a context menu to pop up on a link. When you visit other web pages, not necessarily on GitHub but on any web site, are you able to get Firefox to pop up context menus on links? That's a pretty basic functionality & if you don't have it, I'm at a loss what to try next. Maybe you have another browser extension that is interfering, like an ad blocker? Maybe your antivirus is interfering? Maybe completely uninstall & reinstall Firefox? That would be pretty drastic & I hesitate to firmly offer that advice. You need to think hard before you accept that advice. I am not really confident in offering it. But my Firefox has always popped up context menus on links so I have no idea what to do about your problem.

If you do decide to uninstall Firefox, & like I say, I am not actually encouraging you to do that, but if you think that might help, use Revo Uninstaller to do the uninstall. Do a web search for that product. It is free for home users. I've been using it for years & it's really the best way to uninstall an application. Revo runs the application's own uninstaller, then tries its best to clean up any registry leftovers & delete any leftover files & directories.

Never did get it to work. The new stable version is working---for now.
