Your questionRecently, I have been experiencing a situation where I can download successfully for about 45 minutes to 1hr, but if I go beyond that, I'll continue to get "Download Failures." And I'll continue to get download failures for maybe 4 hours or so, before I'm able to download again for another 45 minutes to 1hr. And the cycle repeats itself. Are the download services being "throttled?" Are we only allowed to download so much per day before being cut off for the rest of the day (or whatever time interval it may be)? If this is true, then what are the regulations involving what we can use and cannot? Addon & CoApp version and detailsVersion 9.5.0.0 (beta), target mozilla, locale en-US. VDH doesn't have any limit, apart from the 2 hour limit for chrome and edge if there is no license. If there is any limit maybe it is from |

This is legitly happening but it's one or a few YouTube videos and then up yours red notice then it stops working on YouTube some days won't even work on one now it's been happening for 2 weeks and we have all reprted the same old thing for these 2 weeks and haven't been listened to by jcfrog for an emergency beta at all. We need to wait for an emergency Beta update which we still haven't had yet by developers and we are getting impatient now thats the true issue. I had to record 40 tracks live and it took an entire 2 days to do it with talking and going out and rests as well. But I never keep the tracks on there even if it goes up and down because it's important to support the music from those repeated streams weekly. |

I recently had to archive around 100 YouTube videos and noticed that after a while, they would all start failing to download. I speculate that they are throttling (or, perhaps in this case, outright blocking) the request somehow based on IP. Switching over to a VPN caused the downloads to immediately start working again (so long as I refreshed the page, or accessed the video fresh while on the new IP), but even that would get blocked after a while, and I'd have to wait a few hours before trying again. Not sure if this info is helpful but it might explain the influx of people thinking VDH is broken on YouTube |

There is no limit in VDH, whatever is happening is being done on youtubes side. This could be too many downloads but there is @TEOL85 , I'm not the developer. jcfrog and Paul work for VDH. |

You are still trying to work what the issue is matt, paul and jcfrog the 3 developers of VDH? I've already known the issue was for ages but you havne't been listening to me developer guys it's to do with basic networking stuff our token ring not developing fully becasue the dash codes list is out of date by not changing the mp4 dash codes list in June 2025 to take out the removed ones from VDH codes and add in the new ones becasue there is now only 40 mp4 codes for the video halves left on YouTube the rest is all webm which VDH doesn't detect at all although it's better quality than both mp4 and mkv conversions of mp4. Well VDH can't from a token ring for it's download if it can either only detect an audio half or only detect a video half if it's working on only out of date dash codes the people do have to trigger a buffer and a format detection change by going up and down your playlist and hitting the one you want in your list again after a lot of swaps to trick the dash code change to form your token ring properly with a code thats supported but still in the VDH database as well and it's a pain in the arse too. On one I tried one of those dodgy websites which only about one is still working in the UK anymore so VDH is really a vital tool to get working again by updating it's database so we get straight token ring formations for every video again that video downloaded straight away on the website interface no issue so it really is the VDH dash codes at fault no throttleing but you had no idea it could be a networking problem of only a half formed dash in the token ring network due to June 2025 changes of removing many mp4 formats and adding more webm and also in between adding new higher quality mode mp4s as the mp4 dash format it still supports. I don't get why all these comments about not a problem in VDH well VDH has no webm support on YouTube in the days of a full takeover becasue they have been obsessed with this fake format mp4 converted to mkv stuff and mp4 going down to 40 this update probably less next year for a start and there may be webm exclusive videos anyway these days out there and then you have the mp4 and m4a format dash codes library being protentually out of date in June 2025 as well and you guys have been replying it's YouTube's end not VDH and haven't been bothered making a beta with all the webm codes added and the mp4 support changed to thew June 2025 formats of it to form the downlaod rings without faffing about to trigger a format change to get your ring. I'm just being totally open minded that there could be an issue within VDH which is relating to only half a ring being formed which the deveopers themeselves could even be clueless about it even happening because there are detections and it does do downloads still I really do think it could be VDH being focused on lower quality mp4 versions has an outdated database of even the mp4 codes yet alone the webm I was telling them to support since months ago as it is becoming a full format takeover fmt 22 orignal HQ mp4 is gone even out of the legacy bin now that isn't even coming back wiht no return. It makes me think VDH has backed the wrong YouTube format horse for the primary support and would have only had to focus on finding mp4 code changes in June 2025 and the latest webm codes if the full YouTube support was readily in the app and not this lazy mp4 only support along with worthless mkv conversion versions of the same mp4 dash files which are not even made with the VP9 and Opu audio dashes the best on Youtube now. I hope the devs are as open minded as I am which is could be a VDH issue afterall it can't form a ring without 2 working dashes so you have to faff around to get 2 dashes on that video in your playlist which is a chure to gett your ring currently when your ring would be straight formed if the codes were the June 2025 updated mp4 dash codes list or if VDH wasn't biosed to mp4 and mkv conversions of mp4 and we had the full webm detections database as well. It's time to make the next beta and followed by the next stable after we tested it for long enough the best VDH yet with the proper full YouTube dash library support even the premium opus audio code it won't be available unless you subscibed or the video is part of the some range on YouTube Normal the codes database says whilst YouTube Music it's blocked to only premium but at least it would be there for the some videos on YouTube Normal range if the code is on the database for it. And then you have all these funky audio dashes like 5.1 Surround m4a, aac, aac and eac3 and dtse to contend with for audio dashes now there as well if a video only has that only the video half of the token ring would be formed and an up yours red dot go forth and multiply message anyway that is the issue with having an out of date pre June 2025 set of codes and that is why you have to try hard to future proof VDH with full support all these new dash formats and webm takeover support both in the mkv conversions and it's real thing I think mp4 should just be there as a format that is still around and protentially some having better quality bitrate when the conversions to webm didn't go too well over the site for now but the focus should be on 48000khz sound formats mkv with VP9 converted pictures and the proper webm files for those who can play them becasue most of the time the VP9 has a larger bitrate and the sound file is definitely better supporting higher range khz on every video when it has converted properly over the site. Lets get past this videos not downloading thing and get ourselves a decent launch for VP8 & VP9 webm support out of the problems VDH has been having we have been asking for it for a long time and reducing mp4 dash video to 40 supported versions and webm to many more than that kinda forced VDH in a corner now for the betterment of the VDH app to support the webm and the funky sound formats and the new mp4 code changes in full. No more I'm too lazy to support webm in the app I'm sticking to mp4 dashes to mkv conversions it is now time to bring the webm in and never turn back on it. WEBM is already fully supported on other websites VDH detects from so to support it all they have to do is add the full database of dash codes for webm they should have done it from the beginning then at least webm would be still working now whilst mp4 isn't forming a ring as it seems like it's mainly mp4 that has had the dash changes in 2025 due to the less becomeing available so some changing their numbers to some removed codes and others being removed completely and new ones for new HD support. Rare videos of AV1Some rarely videos may get AV1 video codec for low views or/and upload date less than 24 hours for average 10 minutes duration video. More incoherent rambling. No punctuation. No logical progression from one idea to the next. Incomprehensible rambling. Let me take issue with some terms you use, since they all seem to be irrelevant. Copied from a Google search:
Token ring has nothing to do with encoding of multimedia content. You can't possibly be using the term correctly. Since I basically can't make heads or tails of what you are on about, I have to assume you have no understanding of the concept of token ring, an obsolete network protocol. Not a multimedia format. A low-level networking protocol. You need to grasp the concept of MKV vs WEBM. Look the terms up. WEBM is a type of MKV. MKV is a broader classification of multimedia. WEBM is a subset of MKV. YouTube presents certain content as WEBM. Paul properly decided to apply the file type of MKV to the WEBM content on YouTube. What you get from VDH when you select one of the MKV variants is just a more general file name than WEBM. The MKV content that VDH downloads is NOT converted from MP4. MKV & MP4 are just alternative formats of multimedia file. What VDH downloads as MKV is the stuff that YouTube labels WEBM. There is no conversion. VDH downloads what YouTube offers & puts the more general file name of MKV on it. WEBM is only a subset of MKV. There isn't even anything there worth thinking about. DASH is not a video format. DASH is a method of delivering multimedia content over the Internet. DASH & HLS are both transport mechanisms, not video formats. There is no such thing as DASH video (nor HLS video for that matter). DASH & HLS deliver multimedia content to users. That multimedia content can be MKV or MP4. Think of it like this. When you order something online, the etail outlet will ship it to you. They might use UPS. They might use FedEx. UPS is like DASH, FedEx is like HLS. They will deliver whatever you bought in either a box or a mailing pouch. A box is like MKV, a mailing pouch is like MP4. UPS can deliver either boxes or mailing pouches. FedEx can deliver either boxes or mailing pouches. Bring it back to the topic of downloading. DASH can deliver MKV or MP4 (or other formats). HLS can deliver MKV or MP4. DASH & HLS are transport mechanisms. MKV & MP4 are file formats. The transport mechanisms & file formats are just 2 separate concepts. Get this straight in your mind. DASH & HLS were invented to handle so-called "chunked" delivery. When you are playing, let's say, a movie in a player on a web page, the server web site does not transmit the entire movie to you. It transmits chunks. A chunk might be 15 seconds or 30 seconds or some other amount of the movie. It allows the player in the page to play that chunk, while in the background the server is sending you the next chunk. So by the time you finish watching the current chunk, the next chunk will be on your system ready to be played. This gives smooth playback. But what if you have to pause playback of the movie? Maybe you have an errand to run. Maybe you got an important phone call. Maybe you got hungry & went in the kitchen to grab a snack or even make a meal. While your movie is paused, the server doesn't send you anything beyond the next chunk. Your Internet connection goes idle while you're not in front of your computer. This is another advantage of the chunked transport mechanism. You get only as much as you are watching & only a little bit of what you are likely to watch next. If you pause playback, data transmission pauses as well. But everybody has a different quality of Internet connection. Some people have fast connections; some people have slow connections. When you have a slow connection, the chunked delivery mechanism detects this & chooses to send you your movie at a lower resolution. A lower resolution takes fewer bytes to contain the same duration of the movie, so a slower connection can still play the movie & it will look smooth to you. If you have a faster connection, the chunked delivery mechanism will send you a higher resolution, which takes more bytes. But playback will still be smooth for you. VDH can download this movie, but obviously playback smoothness is not a consideration. Even if you have a slow connection, you can tell VDH to download the highest resolution. It will take much longer for the download to complete but at least it will complete. Once you have the file on your computer, you can play it & it will look fine because your video player (typically VLC but there are others) will not be concerned about how slow your Internet connection is. The whole file is already on your system & VLC can play it without any glitches. These are the basics of playback & download technology. All your jibberjabber about token rings & DASH halfs & what all else is just noise. When you figure out how to express yourself in a coherent manner, maybe we can have an actual discussion. For now, you are just posting wild ravings that don't amount to much. They certainly don't advance the cause of improving VDH. I really wish Paul would participate here. adding my little grain to the topic... I downloaded +50 videos on June 15th, with several simultaneous downloads, no problem (fully licenced) but a few days after that, all my downloads would fail. The original question was posted on June 20th, so it sounds about the same time i started having issues downloading as well. I did try the VPN method, and it works... once. I have to close firefox entirely, switch to a different country, download another one. rinse an repeat. Much less convenient than the simultaneous, queued downloads from last month, but at least I can confirm it works as a workaround |

I do not work for VDH. I am just another user. Also, please read #2214. There seem to be 2 separate problems, mostly with YouTube, possibly on other sites as well. Problem 1 https://watannetwork.com/tools/blocked/ If you want to know whether something is blocked in your country, try that web site. That doesn't explain WHY some particular item might be blocked in your country. That sort of thing seems unfair to me. But YouTube has never asked my opinion about anything so I doubt they care one whit about geoblocking of any of their content. Problem 2 VDH does not impose any such restrictions (except, as @Mattmjs noted, if you don't have a VDH license, the Chrome & Edge extensions impose a delay of 2 hours between HLS downloads). VDH will happily download whatever you ask for, however many, however close together, even without a license (on Firefox). Only the web sites impose restrictions. |

It seems the searches I was doing were concerned with the view count listed on videos. This count is one way creators monetize their content. But I don't think that is the issue we are concerned with. I finally came up with this search: Does YouTube detect download requests & impose limits? It seems YouTube might consider VDH a filthy transgressor. We may be lucky VDH ever works on YouTube. If you try to download a series of videos in rapid succession, you will likely be blocked at some unknown point, as a number of our fellow users have reported here. Your only recourse is to space out your downloads. Do only 1 at a time, & wait a couple of minutes after each one completes. I say that sucks, but that appears to be the reality of things. |

Interesting . . . Does your ISP also throttle VDH downloads from YouTube? What about other sites? I hardly ever actually play anything on YouTube. The controls in VLC are better than the controls on YouTube . . . or most other web sites, for that matter. So even though I do have the bandwidth should I care to take advantage of it, I still prefer to download whatever YouTube content I want to see, even if it's only 5 minutes long. For one thing, YouTube downloads aren't exposed to YouTube's dreaded embedded ads. |

I wouldn't say I've been rambling I'd say it's more constructive facts now guys because I have self learnt how to get a YouTube code using Chrome now but of course with different formats come different A&V codes but this is a lets compare of codes for the same video last one so far in the 1982 year playlist with the highest at the moment 720p codes on it. YouTube Normal doesn't even have ID codes in it's detection anymore but the YouTube Music has an itag but the itag is the number for the audio code. And then I've seen aty least rr1-rr5 different URL server beginning codes as well for detections. I guess it's going to be real trial and error for the developers though to get the detections for all ID available still and those rr link start server number codes as well. But yeah, seems like my therory is not so much as rambling as it seems becasue there is fact to it the detection links are so different and the ID's for the itags on the links which still use them. All it takes is an itag to be out of whack with the formats still around on YouTube and you'll get a bottleneck so you have to trick the video into a lower quality old id detection then it works. Doesn't look like the same detection codes now does it the highest for this is 720 as it's an audio but the itag is 251 and 232, & 609 are the codes that VDH pick up those are not correct for the correct detection so using that itag in the VDH link is the thing causeing the half ring creation and no handshake so no download for you as VDH detections for YouTube it is a token ring system no 100% ring creation no handshake = no download. The idea is we need to get the best software VDH working like it was again it isn't going to work again if the developers just give up on it instead of working out what the problems could be. The itags being 609 & 232 in VDH are instant alarm bells I think when the network monitor mode in Chrome says the main used fmt code is now 251 and the firefox monitor comes out with the same links which makes them confiremed correct. Of course I censoured out my ip address I don't wanna be hacked I'm not stupid so I won't post a version of the link to get VDH working perfect again with my IP on it ever. Also manifest links are not rr1-rr5 or higher urls so it is an out of date urls system for detecting YouTube links to start as well it might still work barely but it's not the up to date correct url links for VDH to fully work though. I think Firefox and Chrome Network monitor is 100% telling us the truth why some VDH downloads are not even starting whilst others are working and others partially working after tricking buffers on the playlist until an fmt it does work with boots the download 251 fmt isn't even in the system but it seems to be the full quality one popping up all of the time. Most members are now disappointed in the best becoming not even releasing a snap beta to fix the bugs anymore in the matter of the couple of months ago when it wouldn't even detect we got a beta then to fix it but we haven't had a beta in months to fix the random bottlenecking problems which can hopefully be fixed just by adding an fmt 251 after itag folder in it's own links thefore addig another fmt it works with the main one now. There is definitely something behind not having all the m3u8 versions in VDH as well Martin has us covered with all the new 3 digit codes found for that as well and I think there is some sort of converter for normal fmt to m3u8 fmt as well I see it posted somewhere probably on his github. I am not a developer but can see what is going on to make VDH not work being all this rather than thottleling as I meantioned all the dodgy websites that use the http format codes they just work they don't stop mid wat through your playlist there has to be an issue in the fmts not being full as well as the http and m3u8 both needing full codes support rewrite to include all of them in VDH for a new beta test so we can test to see if it fixes the issue before going stable. A total re-write into joiint http and m3u8 with every audio and video code in Martin's database is really the only way to fix it and even I can see that. I've tested an rr url and can 100% say that it does trigger a segment or a full file if it's not a segmented format so the network monitor codes from firefox and chrome are working ones but you have to network monitor all of Martin's test videos to get all the exotic ones programmed in VDH then you gotta work out the extension webm or mp4 or something else as it only grabs videoplayback without an extension but the software should be able to both change it to the name like it does currently as well as give it the correct extension so the videoplayback changes to .mp4 .webm any other format it uses as well as the tag information replacing the generic ones but I feel a VDH Beta rewrite of YouTube needs to happen with both the http rr urls as well as m3u8 so every format is covered until a new format comes but those will come out straight away. And sadly by devs pussyfooting about when the problem is right in front of them the urls not being the full database they now have July 2025 to contend with even more new codes and even more took away yay. Well on the good side of things on Martin's github there are plenty of sample videos to network monitor a correct working videoplayback format url for all formats found for his database in the first place for Firefox the browser which is fully VDH compatible with all the sites the monitor is activated by doing this. 3 lines > more tools > web developer tools > network the working urls for vdh are detected in there and all the test videos to monitor outside of 251 youtube music with a picture video only. https://gist.github.com/MartinEesmaa/2f4b261cb90a47e9c41ba115a011a4aa All the exotic format test videos are on there so use network monitor then change the cog picture and sound formats for every format to be in the network scan then it's good to go to program into VDH as they work I got a download from them but censoured my IP for obvious reasons of hacking it will take some time to get all working urls from the tests into something workable in VDH programmign which means we may not get the beta for a month but at least with the hard efforts of coders we can get a fully working picklup again. |

I feel what might be helpful in the future is some sort of a manual links input manual HLS where you can copy and paste a link from network monitor to see if VDH can snag from the URL. I'd like to see what happens if I use rr server links in VDH if it can't do it itself when I need a troubeshooting of a non working m3u8 version. Or even better a VDH that can pick up links directly automaticlly from an open firefox monitor if it can detect one open. Flawless session for the radio so far today of course I'll be deleting as soon as I've finished the tracks from it anyway I like to support the artists with a payment by giving it a different stream every week if I reuse tracks. lol m3u8 mode VDH uses only at the moment is definitely throttled so I would say it's both our therories in one as http mode can't be throttled or you can't watch a whole day of videos one after the other on the site itself. But we have to put our therories to the test. lol. 1981 is working fine at the moment almost 20 done but bet it stops working nearer the 40 though becasue m3u8 is being throttled and http isn't but alls good this week whilst last week was a pain in the bum had to cycle through playlists over and over and also use both YouTube Normal and Music server modes on the links as well which got all 40 in 6 long hours. lol We gotta get manual HLS url link downloading or automatic firefox network monitor link url detections or a normal VDH http version detection running I think it's the only way we are getting things to be flawless working ever again with the downlaod speed of VDH without facing the throttles of the m3u8 protocol server versions of the codes. But then again VDH has been behaving itself today so far as well. lol I had my first up yours go forth and multiply for today quite a long streak today of about 30 before it happened for the first time today. This week it is bringing up a new and improved or should I say a worse bad news updated messege with a more detailed log on it over the previous weeks of nonsence as well which probably shows us exactly the issues this week. This new version for this week definitely needs a post to the devs. After this I moved to YouTube Normal it still didn't work second time this time. But then oddly I tried hard download which is not the side download on the panel and that mode made the new crash logs work because the new up yours tells us it is a is a side download log could this have been the bug all along on top of the few missing m3u8 versions and all the missing http versions which is everything missng there who knows. At least if Side Download is the glitch thanks to the new up yours teling us this that can be dealt with now but there is still a possibilty of links not opening being the second bug version to deal with for the YouTube glitching due to the http and the latest m3u8s from July 2025 not being updated in the apps lists yet. We finally might have our 2 issues though now it's time to se if it repelicates the new side download crash messege replacement which has now come up for the up yours by getting the rest of my list. At least for the m3u8 codes we have which still works it has been working all day for me today until that track but we do need m3u8 detection list updated either way in the new beta as well and maybe a test for http verients as well which I keep pushing for now as 251 the main used audio one is an http code only along wiht the video pair for the 251 as well and any network scanner links always shows only the 251 as fmt and just has fussy wuzzies for the video with no fmt which seems to be how these new versions of their http dash codes work they only have fmt in the code on the music server and on normal server fuzzy wuzzies although the fmt is detected by fuzzy wuzzies however the m3u8 seems to use an fmt that it has to input for all of them still as VDH still uses that exclusivly without the http: yet. I'm happy with this it really tells us what is going wrong now. So next time it replicates on a different track on the final 10 if it even does today I should go straight to clicking hard download see what happens for a second time but then I can't promise this would happen again I had a good day only once but a new messege which tells us it's the side downlaoad so I tried normal hard download and it ran. All new messeges are bad news but this is good news too becasue we get more of an idea what is happening on the m3u8 which we have programmed so all VDH has to do is fix side download and also add the July 2025 list updated m3u8 and hopefully add support for http versions as well as the mainly used 251 is http exclusive. Second time it happened normal exit code 1 up yours no replication and normal download it didn't work so yeah throttling on m3u8 is definitely a major issue that we would be better off going http codes even if we lose the titles as if http is throttled we wouldn't be able to view videos so they can't throttle those links thats why we need to support them now they can throttle the m3u8 server all they like they will never be able to do that on the http even though it's an annoying videoplayback with no extension so VDH has to maybe has to use a clever m3u8 scan for it's titles and file type extensions because it doesn't have the .webm or the .mp4 on the http links outputs and http for it's downloads hybrid system. You'll have to see what you can do with Martin's sample videos and getting network monitor versions of all of them. I'm sure your special dev builds can even test urls but that feature is closed to normal people if the http codes work in VDH never go back to m3u8 just find your own way to get the workable extension and title on it posibly still using m3u8 for the ID tag but http for the file if VDH is magic and can do both. lol The one which crashed on the side downlaod was a rare 256k m4a audio one available on free users mode and the picture on the normal download was a black screen not a working artwork I guess it was just too exotic for a video mode VDH but the sound hash only worked on a non side download. There is no throttling by VDH. It does not fail by what codec is used. It will either work ( the download is successful) or it fails with an If it fails for you on youtube, it will be one of two things
I've seen one example of that, a Billy English video someone brought to the forum. You don't bring examples so figure it out yourself. ffmpeg or yt-dlp will tell you using the m3u8 link. yt-dlp can also use the youtube video link.
It looks like ffmpeg was used from your post above, note the part of the link in bold. Your download failed because it was protected by DRM. To summarize, it will fail for the two reasons stated. It will never fail because of what codec got use or what container format was |

I recently had to archive around 100 YouTube videos and noticed that after a while, they would all start failing to download. I speculate that they are throttling (or, perhaps in this case, outright blocking) the request somehow based on IP.
Switching over to a VPN caused the downloads to immediately start working again (so long as I refreshed the page, or accessed the video fresh while on the new IP), but even that would get blocked after a while, and I'd have to wait a few hours before trying again.
Not sure if this info is helpful but it might explain the influx of people thinking VDH is broken on YouTube
