Hi everyone!

Here's another problem I noticed recently on Youtube with VDH.

When videos on Youtube are proceeded by a warning message and you have to confirm you have seen that message by clicking on "I understand and wish to proceed", you subsequently get to see the video, but VDH does not detect it, no matter what you try.

Here's a I video I'd like to download where this problem occurs:

It could be IP and country related but I've tried from my own country and with a VPN from Germany, but the only thing that changes when you do that is the language of the message displayed below the video. The problem persists. VDH does not detect the video.

I could try finding a VPN from a country where the warning message does not appear, but that might take a while.

Now I can also certainly capture the video using a workaround that does not involve VDH but I'd like a solution all the same...

Can anyone help with this?

The prompt you are describing is for age-restricted content. This is something YouTube does, not VDH. Age-restricted YouTube content has been a problem for VDH for several years. It has not been addressed. You are out of luck for the time being. You'll have to use your alternative techniques until VDH is fixed to support this type of content.

The prompt is not for age restricted content in this case, but for a warning saying "The following content may contain suicide or self-harm topics." (It's an episode from the BBC series "Who Do You Think You Are?" on genealogy), but I guess the technical issue is the same, namely that Youtube has created a roadblock that is not (yet) anticpated by VDH.
I already feared there might not be a solution, so I will indeed try to get the video using alternative techniques.

Oh. Wait. Once I signed in, I got this:

OK. I see what you're talking about. But it's still age-restricted content that forces you to sign in. I don't believe I've ever seen this second layer of nervous nanny protection before.

Just for yucks, after I clicked the yes proceed button, I tried clicking the VDH control for force detection. That signed me out. Also interesting. Actually, it only appeared to sign me out. Further use showed I was actually still signed in & I had to manually log out later.

Not that this changes anything. We're looking at age-restricted content & VDH doesn't work on this.

It is my understanding that VDH goes through some weird contortions to get YouTube to cough up an HLS master manifest on ordinary content. If you watch the Firefox Network Monitor (in the Developer Tools), you will never see anything that looks like an m3u8 file. So VDH knows some magic formula for getting an m3u8 file from YouTube. I sure don't know what the magic formula is. I imagine it's a VDH trade secret & one justification for the VDH license. For age-restricted content, I suspect YouTube needs to be prodded in some way that is different from what you have to do with normal content. Or it may not be possible to prod it. Such content may additionally be blocked by DRM or Google's non-standard modifications of DRM that aren't detected by Firefox as DRM. That would mean there's no hope that VDH would ever handle YouTube age-restricted content. I don't know. I don't have access to the code. I probably wouldn't understand it anyway. If I had that level of knowledge, I would probably not bother using VDH.
