Runner on auto-update or not?

The documentation vagely states, setting the runner on auto-update can lead to problems.
Can anyone share their experiences?

We're currently undecided between
a) setting the runnter on auto-update
b) redeploying with the latest tag of the runner image periodically (maybe every two weeks)
Just leaving the runner on a fixed version seems to be no viable options as we've already run twice into Github errors stating the runner is too old.
