JP variant glyphs remap compilation #541

@CoolMarvel43

Description

@CoolMarvel43

UPDATE: Sans v2.005 has not fixed this issue because unfortunately this was posted too late into the development cycle when the update was so close to being released, so this issue will remain open.

I would like to add on to several existing issues (#522, #528, #534) because I spent weeks checking every single JP variant glyph (including JP90 glyphs) that can potentially be used for other locales, to save glyph space and to ensure consistency. Serif issues will also be put here.

This one is more complete (excluding a few characters that are previously reported) and I hope that they’ll be addressed as well.

匀 component

U+5300 匀 can remove CN glyph and use the uni5300uE0101-JP glyph for CN. TW and HK may consider using the JP glyph as closest reference. Also applies to Serif.

U+5747 均 can remove CN glyph and use the uni5747uE0101-JP glyph for CN. Also applies to Serif.

Image Image

化 component

U+5316 化 may consider removing the CN glyph and use the uni5316uE0101-JP glyph for CN. Consider adjusting the latter for balance if possible. Serif has already done that.

U+57D6 埖 can consider using JP glyph for TW and HK locale, while the uni57D6uE0101-JP can be used for KR. Also applies to Serif.

U+9774 靴 can remove CN glyph and use the uni9774uE0101-JP glyph. Serif has no such JP variant glyph.

Image Image

月 and 肖 components

For some characters, there is no reason for the CN glyph to exist for HK when the JP variant glyphs are being used for the CN locale. Those glyphs look nearly identical, so I suggest to remove the CN glyph and use the JP variant glyphs for HK as well.

Yes, I am aware that it was raised before (#522), but I am expanding on it.

Unicode Character Action Glyph target for locale Also applies to Serif?
U+54E8 Use JP90 glyph for HK and remove CN glyph (as mentioned and fixed in #534 and v2.005) uni54E8-JP90-JP for HK Yes, but for CN and HK as well
U+5C51 Use JP90 glyph for HK and remove CN glyph uni5C51-JP90-JP for HK Yes, but for CN and HK as well
U+68C8 Use JP var glyph for HK and remove CN glyph uni68C8uE0101-JP for HK Serif only needs to fix the HK mapping to use the JP variant glyph.
U+731C Use JP var glyph for HK and remove CN glyph uni731CuE0101-JP for HK No. Serif has already done that.
U+83D4 Use JP var glyph for CN and remove CN glyph uni83D4uE0101-JP for CN No. Serif has already done that.
U+86F8 Use JP90 glyph for HK and remove CN glyph uni86F8-JP90-JP for HK No. Serif has already done that.
U+873B Use JP var glyph for HK and remove CN glyph (as mentioned and fixed in #522 and v2.005 (which is unfortunately the JP variant glyph, thankfully though, the CN glyph takes the shape of the removed JP variant glyph)) uni873BuE0101-JP for HK No. There is no JP var glyph in Serif (#425)
U+8D99 Use JP var glyph for HK and remove CN glyph uni8D99uE0101-JP for HK Yes, but for CN and HK as well
U+975C Use JP var glyph for HK and remove CN glyph uni975CuE0102-JP for HK No. Serif has already done that.
U+9798 Use JP var glyph for HK and remove CN glyph uni9798-JP90-JP for HK No. There is no JP var glyph in Serif (#425)
U+9BB9 Use JP var glyph for HK and remove CN glyph uni9BB9uE0101-JP for HK No. Serif has already done that.
U+9BD6 Use JP var glyph for HK and remove CN glyph uni9BD6-JP90-JP for HK No. Serif has already done that.

戶 component

U+67A6 枦 can use uni67A6uE0101-JP for KR and TW. Serif only need to use the variant glyph for KR, while HK will need to use CN glyph.

U+82A6 芦 can use uni82A6-JP for TW. Serif has already done that.

U+6CAA 沪 can use uni6CAAuE0101-JP for KR and TW. Serif only needs to use the variant glyph for KR.

U+7C90 粐 can use uni7C90uE0101-JP for KR and TW. Also applies to Serif.

U+822E 舮 can use uni822EuE0101-JP for KR and TW (even if the JP orthography of the 舟 radical will not make it compatible with TW handwriting standards). Serif only need to use variant glyph for KR.

Image Image

耳 component

U+6065 恥 may consider removing the CN glyph and use the uni6065uE0101-JP glyph for CN. Serif has already done that.

U+6930 椰 may consider removing the CN glyph and instead use the uni6930uE0101-JP glyph for CN. There is no JP variant glyph for Serif, so I suggest to consider replacing the CN glyph with an unreleased uni6930uE0101-JP glyph if possible, as per issue #425.

U+8074 聴 can use uni8074uE0101-JP for CN (although there was a v1 CN glyph for Sans, see #432). For Serif, use JP for TW and HK.

U+9D48 鵈 can use JP glyph for TW and HK. Also applies to Serif. A note that there was a v1 CN glyph but JP variant glyph is better designed anyway.

Image Image

These are the v1 CN glyphs for U+8074 聴 and U+9D48 鵈.
Image

酉 component

U+9156 酖 may consider using JP glyph for CN, remove CN glyph. Also applies to Serif.

U+91A2 醢󠄁 can remove TW glyph and use the uni91A2uE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Also applies to Serif.

U+91B4 醴 can remove TW glyph and use the uni91B4uE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Serif has already done that.

U+91BA 醺 can remove TW glyph and use the uni91BAuE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. There is no uni91BAuE0101-JP glyph for Serif (#425).

Image Image

忍 component

U+5FCD 忍 may consider removing the CN glyph and use the uni5FCDuE0101-JP glyph for CN. Also applies to Serif.

U+8375 荵 may consider removing the CN glyph and use the uni8375uE0101-JP glyph for CN and KR. Serif only needs an additional remapping of the uni8375uE0101-JP glyph for KR (despite being an off-scope character).

Image Image

羽 component

U+7FC5 翅 can remove TW glyph and use the uni7FC5uE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. The CN glyph may remain in place. There is no uni7FC5uE0101-JP glyph for Serif, so I suggest to consider replacing the CN glyph with an unreleased uni7FC5uE0101-JP glyph (see issue #425).

U+7FC6 翆 may consider using uni7FC6uE0101-JP for TW and HK. Also applies to Serif.

Image Image

垔 component

U+6E6E 湮 can remove TW glyph and use the uni6E6EuE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Serif is correct, although the TW glyph is in place instead of an ideal uni6E6EuE0101-JP glyph (see issue #425).

Image Image

尃 component

U+5085 傅 can remove TW glyph and use the uni5085uE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Serif does not have the uni5085uE0101-JP glyph, so no change for this (see issue #425).

U+640F 搏 can remove TW glyph and use the uni640FuE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Serif has already done that.

Image Image

曼 component

U+5E54 幔 can remove TW glyph and use the uni5E54uE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Serif has already done that.

U+6162 慢 may consider removing the CN glyph and instead use the JP glyph for CN. Serif has already done that.

U+66FC 曼 can remove TW glyph and use the uni66FCuE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Serif has already done that.

Image Image

Miscellaneous

U+50CF 像 can remove TW glyph and use the uni50CFuE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Also applies to Serif.

U+5953 奓 can remove TW glyph and use the uni5953uE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Serif I am not sure.

U+6025 急 may consider remove CN glyph and use the JP glyph for CN. Also applies to Serif.

U+61A4 憤 may need to replace the CN and TW glyphs with an unreleased JP glyph, as per issue #425 (design wise JP-design 忄 radical is better than the stiff CN-designed one). Technically, it will be easier to use the TW glyph for all regions, because I feel that CN has an unnecessary regional difference. For more details, see #539. Serif has the JP glyph instead for CN.

U+6D78 浸 may consider removing the CN glyph and instead use the JP glyph for CN.

U+6E72 湲 can remove the CN glyph and use the uni6E72uE0101-JP glyph for CN, TW and HK. Serif has already done that.

U+74CA 瓊 may need to remove TW glyph and use uni74CAuE0101-JP for TW and HK instead.

U+79BA 禺 can remove TW glyph and use the uni79BAuE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Ignore for Serif due to a regional stylistic design difference.

If the unification of the top ⺮ radical is considered (see issue #398), U+7C3F 簿 can remove the TW glyph and use the uni7C3FuE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Also applies to Serif.

U+8015 耕 can remove TW glyph and use the uni8015uE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Serif has already done that.

U+8017 耗 can remove TW glyph and use the uni8017uE0101-JP glyph for TW and HK. Serif has already done that.

U+96B2 隲 can use uni96B2uE0101-JP for CN, TW and HK (although there was a v1 CN glyph, see #432). Do not change for Serif.

Serif-only suggestions

Not applicable to Sans due to regional design difference.

U+5264 剤 can map to uni5264uE0101-JP for KR for having the axe stroke consistency despite it being off-scope.

U+5B5A 孚 can remove CN glyph and use the uni5B5AuE0101-JP glyph for CN, TW and HK.

U+5C28 尨 can remove TW glyph and use the JP glyph for TW and HK.

U+6108 愈 can consider removing the CN glyph and use uni6108-JP90-JP for CN & HK instead.

U+6167 慧 may consider creating a proper uni6167uE0102-JP glyph instead of using the TW glyph (#425). Ignore if not important.

U+6240 所 can remove CN glyph and use the uni6240uE0101-JP glyph for CN, TW and HK instead.

U+6589 斉 can map to uni6589uE0101-JP for KR for having the axe stroke consistency despite it being off-scope.

U+658E 斎 can map to uni658EuE0101-JP for KR for having the axe stroke consistency despite it being off-scope.

U+6590 斐 may consider creating a new KR glyph where the pickup stroke in 非 does not cross, based off uni6590uE0101-JP. The top half 非 component is from the normal JP glyph while the bottom half 文 component (with the axe stroke) is from the uni6590uE0101-JP glyph.

U+696F 楯 can consider removing the CN glyph and use uni696F-JP90-JP glyph for CN instead.

U+6E08 済 can map to uni6E08uE0101-JP for KR for having the axe stroke consistency despite it being off-scope.

For U+7FFC 翼, consider removing the CN glyph and using the uni7FFCuE0101-JP for CN, and also removing the TW glyph and using the JP glyph for TW and HK.

U+95AB 閫 can remove CN glyph and use the uni95ABuE0101-JP glyph for CN, TW and HK.
