Installation error seemingly due to

[tool.hatch.version]
source = "vcs"`

in pyproject.toml

Provide a minimal, self-contained, and reproducible example (i.e. an MWE):

After forking and cloning to local machine:

conda env create -n aesara-dev -f environment-arm.yml
conda activate aesara-dev
pip install -r requirements.txt

Versions and main components

• Aesara version: 2.8.12 (lastest)
• Python version: 3.10.9
• Operating system: MacOS
• How did you install Aesara: (conda/pip) via contribution list.

How did you clone the repository? If you haven't pulled the tags, that might be the issue.

It worked, thank you! However as a disclaimer, I had to change the upstream url to https:// instead of git://. This has more details on why that was needed. I'm not sure if that's "issuable" but it's a tiny fix to the contributing docs.

Also is there a way to mention pulling the tags in the contributing docs as well?

Yes, we should add that!

In general, anyone can put in a PR for anything. We just recommend that there already exist an issue for the idea and that a discussion occur first, so that contributor efforts aren't wasted. For small changes such that wasted time isn't much of a problem, this advice might not apply, but for larger changes it's very important.
