Need to increase hearbeat for the timeout of source connector

Hello,
I have a custom connector that seems to timeout after 180 minutes. I have two questions, what kind of activity is required to reset that timeout timer?

I have also tried to change heartbeat-max-seconds-between-messages in flags.yml to a higher number, but it doesnt take effect.
What are my options?
