Is there a way to create initial text that doesn't get typed?

I want to have a starting sentence, or paragraph, and then have typing effects which delete and replace words from it as per standard typewriter animation. I have tried a number of different things, but I haven't been able to figure it out and can't see any examples of this functionality, although I thought it wouldn't be such a rare request.

Any suggestion?
