Icon defaulting to "file" for hidden directories

I'm trying to make a tui application, I noticed that hidden directories don't have the icons of regular directories:

As you can see, empty is different from .empty.

Is this on purpose? is there a way to override this?

I realised just now that this affects directories that aren't hidden either. Here are some entries from /nix/store
