Pedalino mini 8 diagram

While I have almost soldered everything on the pedalino mini 8 (except the connections to the t-display shield), I just realised that the diagram is showing the board from the top and not from the bottom as I am actually working on the board.

I guess this is not a big deal (I have not yet soldered the t-display shield), but I was wondering if it would have an impact on the neopixel led strips?
From the diagram I should have soldered the strip with vcc / gnd / data input at the top but in my case it is sitting at the bottom.
I can still swap the 2 strips but I am just wondering if this is something that can be done with the software or if I really have to do it ?

Yes, you can do by software. You can assign any led to any foot switch in Controls setup.

By design led sequence is

5 4 3 2 1
6 7 8 9 10

In your build led sequence is

6 7 8 9 10
5 4 3 2 1

This is just great the assignment can be done with the software. I will then leave it as it is and change the mapping in the software.

This is just an incredible project, I have not yet finished with the hardware part but I had a look at the screenshots of the software and this is just crazy all the options which are available !!!

I just have a couple more questions

1. I have used the schematic of the Pedalino8 repo as I am planning to use 2 expression pedals with the board.
   I have a bunch of models I have purchased over time (Roland EV-5 , Hotone Ampero II Press, Zoom FP02M, Sonicake vexpress...)

Do I just have to connect PIN_D1/PIN_D2 to TIP, PIN_A1/PIN_A2 to RING and GND to SLEEVE or depending on the pedal specs I should use a specific wiring with resistors or Voltage ladder shown in schematic #3 here : https://github.com/alf45tar/PedalinoMini/blob/master/doc/BOM%20and%20Schematics.md#schematic which is compatible with each specific pedal ?

For instance if I want to connect my EV-5 to the first TRS jack input, can I just connect it "as-is" with tip -> PIN_D1, Ring -> PIN_A1 and GND -> Sleeve ? I see a diagram with "Pedal volume" and "Minimal volume" 10k and 50K pots so I am a bit confused whether I should wire those pots between the TRS jack and the Lilygo T-Display S3?

2. My second question is about Controls / Pedals. I undersand the "Pedals" Configuration is basically everything (external device like expression pedal, switches etc...) that is connected to the TRS jacks.
   However for "Controls" it is mentioned: "A control is a single switch of a pedal". I am very confused about the relationship between pedals and controls. I thought controls where the physical footswitches on the board (like the 8 switches on the pedalino 8). I don't understand how and why it relates to "pedals" ? Or does it mean for each "Control" (aka footswitch) I can assign a different behavior for each pedal attached to a TRS jack ?

From hardware point of view a Pedal is a TRS port which can be internal (virtual port and jack) or external (physical port). Each TRS port requires 1 digital pin (TIP) and 1 analog pin (RING). PedalinoMini 8 has "only" 6 pedals because the board has only 6 digital/6 analog pins available.
You can attach to each TRS port different type of switches or expression pedals or other equipment (resistor ladder, digital encoder, drum trigger, ultrasonic sensor, etc). For example PedalinoMini 8 is using 4 internal ports of type MOMENTARY2 and the remaining 2 as external ports. There are 2 momentary switches (buttons) connected to each internal port for a total of 8.
For each switch you need to define a Control: pedal 1 button 1 and pedal 1 button 2 and so on for a total of 8 Controls.

"Pedal Volume" and "Minimal Volume" pots are the EV-5 pots. I reported the schematics of common type of expression pedals (Yamaha vs. Roland standard).

Hi, again thank you so much for your time and explanations.

Now it is getting much much clearer. I think the most confusing point for me was the terminology used. "Pedal" for me was just a physical pedal connected to the physical TRS jack.
Now I understand "Pedal" is either a physical or logical TRS port.
T-Display having only 6 pairs of analog/digital pins, I understand 2 (pairs) of them are used for the physical TRS jacks and 4 are logical ones for the internal buttons (footswitches). Each internal "Pedal" is controlling 2 buttons (footswitches).

I hope I get it :)

Now I just have one remaining question.
The Pedalino Mini 8 can only support 6 pedals (TRS ports), in the interface I can see that you need to define the type for each pedal so I guess in my case, as I want to use 2 expression pedals, I need to assign 2 pedals = ANALOG and the 4 remaining ones should be = MOMENTARY 2 (my 2x4=8 internal/physical footswitches)

So far so good but how do I know which Pedal # does match with the physical TRS jacks ? Is it like Pedal 1 and Pedal 2 do match with the external/physical TRS jacks, or is it Pedal 5 and Pedal 6 ? How do I know ?

Also, when I define let say Pedal 3 = MOMENTARY2 . I understand that means Pedal 3 will control 2 of my internal buttons/footswitched but when I go to the CONTROL page, how do I know which physical footswitches are matching my PEDAL 3 ?

In MOMENTARY 2 configuration 1st button is connected to the digital pin and the 2nd button is connected to the analog pin.
If you match the schematic of T-Display S3 board and PedalinoMini 8 connection you can discover the following assignments

Control 1      Control 2     Control 3    Control 4
Pedal 1        Pedal 1       Pedal 2      Pedal 2
Button 1       Button 2      Button 1     Button 2

Control 5      Control 6     Control 7    Control 8
Pedal 3        Pedal 3       Pedal 4      Pedal 4
Button 1       Button 2      Button 1     Button 2

Pedal 5 is the bottom TRS port. No default configuration and control assigned.
Pedal 6 is the top TRS port. No default configuration and control assigned.

I will add the above schema to the documentation however when you upload the PedalinoMini8 firmware all the Pedals and Controls configuration is already there. If you changed the led connection you should adjust led assignment only.

I do understand the mapping from your last comment but my question was more about the physical layout of the buttons.

On the PedalinoMini8 the layout is like this (my numbering is arbitrary, just for the purpose of understanding):

My question is : when you define
Pedal 1 = MOMENTARY2
and then for this pedal you define

Control 1 Control 2
Pedal 1 Pedal 1
Button 1 Button 2

How do you know which physcal button ( (1) to (8) in my diagram above) does match "Button 1" and "Button 2" ?

To say it differently: Should I have to assume that:

Pedal 1 Button 1 = PIN_D1
Pedal 1 Button 2 = PIN_A1
Pedal 2 Button 1 = PIN_D2
Pedal 2 Button 2 = PIN_A2
Pedal 3 Button 1 = PIN_D3
Pedal 3 Button 2 = PIN_A3
etc...

because in the PedalinoMini8 schematic I see the connection to the t-display shield but there's not info about which connection point on the shield does match which pin on the t-display

Hi again,

I have finished building the PedalinoMini8.
I flashed the "PedalinoMini8" firmware on the T-Display S3
I have a problem with the RGB leds but I will have a look later.

So far my biggest problem and question is about the mapping of the pedals to the physical buttons

I have carefully followed your instructions and the wiring diagram of the PedalinoMini8

The physical button layout being:
1-2-3-4
5-6-7-8

PIN_D1 is connected to button 1
PIN_A1 is connected to button 2
PIN_D2 is connected to button 3
PIN_A2 is connected to button 4
etc...

after flashing the firmware Pedal 1 to 4 are already defined as "Momentary 2"
Controls are already defined as:
Control 1 = Pedal 1 / Button 1
Control 2 = Pedal 1 / Button 2
Control 3 = Pedal 2 / Button 1
Control 4 = Pedal 2 / Button 2
etc...

Problem is that I tried creating 2 actions on Control 1 and Control 2 and the result is:
Control 1 is triggered by a press on physical button 2 (where it should be button 1)
Control 2 is triggered by a press on physical button 7 (where is should be button 2)

It looks like even though I have followed the correct mapping between the physical buttons and the Analog/Digital pin #, the actual mapping is completely messed up.

Do you have any idea what could be wrong ?

In addition to my issue above I did investigate my led strip issue.
As I have a spare wled controller i simply removed the t-display from the shield and connected the wled controller +5v / data / gnd to the matching pins on the t-display shield (which is connected to the led strip) and... It works perfectly
However I do not have any led turning on when creating actions in the pedalino firmware. I have tried several combinations of leds, I checked that I have 10 leds in the config (it cannot be changed), I checked my leds are GRB (same conf as with my wled controller), I checked multiple times the data pin is matching with the pedalinomini8 and t-display diagram but I could not make any led turning on.

In the meantime I had a look at this post: #541
This is about PedalinoMini6 but I noticed it is very different from the diagram of the PedalinoMini8:

1. You mentioned GPIO21 must be used for the led strip while GPIO03 data pin is used on the mini8 diagram
2. You mentionned button 1 = Analog pin, button 2 = digital pin, button 3 = analog pin etc... while on the mini8 this is the opposite, the first button is connected to digital pin, the second to analog pin etc....
3. for the TRS external connectors you mention TIP = Analog and RING = digital, this is the opposite on the Mini8

Maybe the Mini8 has a completely different firmware that would explain the difference with the mini6 but I was just wondering if all my issues are not coming from incorrect mini8 diagram....

Schematic is not in sync with the latest source code (from version 3.5.0 and later).
I will fix it and in the meantime you can use the source code below as reference

Ok thanks I was really going crazy as I was sure I was matching the schematic.

I have changed according to your last message.
All is working fine now except I was not sure whether each first button of a pedal was supposed to be on analog or digital pin.
I randomly chose analog and of course it is supposed to be on... digital :(

I have then set
Control 1 = button 2
Control 2 = button 1
Control 3 = button 2
etc...

Do you think it is a problem to leave it like this or do I have to swap all analog/digital pins?

Also for the physical TRS jacks, I was not sure as well and I soldered the Tip on analog and the Ring on digital, do you think this is a problem?

For the internal switches inverting analog and digital is not an issue. You can always configure then via software.
For the physical TRS is is an issue if you plan to connect an analog pedal because PedalinoMini cannot read values. It is not a issue if you plan to connect only footswitches because analog pin is used as digital.

I am currently testing the pedal with usb midi and BLE on my computer with a guitar modeling software.
It works well. I just have some bugs sometimes when progamming actions it randomly mess up with all my programming and assign for instance multiple actions to ACTION 1 while I had assigned only one.
Not a big deal as I guess I can save my configuration.
This is a great project I am really impressed with you work!

Coming back to my question, indeed I want to connect 2 expression pedals to both TRS sockets
I will leave the internal buttons as it is but I will then change the external TRS jacks

Just to be 100% sure, can you please confirm TIP = Digital and RING = Analog on external TRS jacks if I want to connect expression pedals ?

Another confirmation please: after flashing PedalinoMini8 firmware, Pedal 5 and 6 are not used but Pedal 7 and 8 are assigned to "Momentary". Can you confirm I must disable Pedal 7 / 8, and enable Pedal 5 / 6 as "ANALOG" in order to use expression pedals ?
