Is it necessary to fork the official OpenTelemetry repository?

If you don't intend to modify the core mechanisms of OpenTelemetry Java Instrumentation and only want to make simple extensions, there's absolutely no need to fork this repository. You can refer to https://github.com/signalfx/splunk-otel-java. Forking it will make it difficult to keep up with subsequent updates.

This is a distro from concrete vendor, we have investigated it ahead of open-sourcing this project, it can't help us to achieve our target.

This repository is useful for us, we plan to implement some new extensions from Alibaba based on OTel Java Instrumentation. For general content, we will contribute them to upstream, if they are reluctant to accept them and think some of them are too proprietary, we will commit to here.
