Revisit web sockets

Currently, they're not being used on the production website but I don't want to necessarily kill it off either. Messages (and I think notifications) make use sockets so let's make the decision.

- Do we kill them off?
- Do we add support for third-party services like Pusher so web host doesn't have to run it themselves?
