Description

By default, if a byline profile is associated with a WordPress user, that byline is added to any post the user opens if the post doesn't have a byline attached.

We at @sfstandard think it would be useful to have the option to disable this behavior for specific users while leaving it active for other users.

Use Case

There are some people in the newsroom who almost never publish something with their own byline, but they do regularly edit posts created by others, which may include posts with no byline. For example, sometimes we publish roundups of reader emails as a sort of letters-to-the-editor column, or breaking news editors may publish wire stories that don't have a byline attached.

In these situations, the users are often surprised when their byline is attached to a story, and since they're not expecting it to happen, they don't always catch it before publishing the change. It has been a recurring issue reported in our newsroom since we introduced Byline Manager about a year ago.

But we recognize that for most users, having the byline added automatically is a great time-saving feature that simplifies the workflow of producing a story. So we think that being able to disable the functionality on a per-user basis would help ensure that those users can retain the benefits while eliminating the confusion for the minority of users who don't publish under their own byline.
