Description & Motivation
al-folio currently has no support for Substack as a social link. With the jekyll-socials plugin handling social icon rendering, adding Substack requires changes in both the plugin and the theme.
Substack has grown into one of the most popular publishing platforms on the internet. As of early 2025, it has surpassed 5 million paid subscriptions and is the second most downloaded news app in the App Store. Despite this, Font Awesome has never added a Substack icon — the FortAwesome/Font-Awesome#16586 was open for 5 years before a maintainer closed it without fulfilling it.
Given Substack's widespread adoption, especially among writers, journalists, and academics — a core audience of al-folio — it should be supported as a first-class social link alongside platforms like Medium, Bluesky, and Mastodon.
Pitch
- Add
filland hoverfillCSS rules for inline SVG icons in_sass/_components.scssand_sass/_navbar.scssso they match existing font icon color/hover behavior - Add
substack_usernamecase to_includes/metadata.liquidfor schema.orgsameAsmetadata - Depends on george-gca/jekyll-socials#4 which adds
substack_usernameas a built-in social platform with an inline SVG icon (since Font Awesome has none)"
