Making an In-Campus Map Application

What is the issue that you are facing?

When we take into consideration the coverage area of the Campus where Students Commute, It covers a large area which includes the Ashram, the Bridge and all the collages. There are times when a student is instructed to go from point A to point B but they don't really know where point B is. Let's take an example, consider a Biotech student want to configure his/hers laptop with Amrita Connect, then they have to reach the ICTS office in the Engineering campus to get this done. But the catch is the Biotech student does not know where the ICTS office is as it is on a different campus.

How often do you face this issue?

This issue is mostly faced by Freshers as they are new to the campus and does not know where exactly different places are inside the Campus.

Where do you face this issue?

I have faced this issue during my initial college days when I had to figure out where the Accounts, Administrative office and CIR was so as to get some of my paperwork done.

Do you think, a lot of your friends face the same issue?

Yes, I think most of the freshers would be facing this issue.

What have you tried to solve the issue?

The only feasible solution currently is to keep on asking people on the way how to reach the destination.

What do you think is causing the issue?

Lack of a proper map Application.

Have you thought of any ideas that may solve the issue?

It would be nice if there was a map application which would allow students to input their required destination, which would direct them as google map does to the location they want. The catch here is that on top of what google map is providing we need to consider the floors on building to get the precise location. As the college has a distributed mesh wifi I think in addition to the in build GPS of the mobile phone of the student this would be helpful in determining the accurate location of the student.

Hi Abhijit,

Thanks for raising this issue, sounds interesting.

I have checked Google Maps of Amritapuri Campus, it looks like most of the information is there? The major thing we are missing is Indoor Maps, I have also checked with the Google Indoor Maps team for the addition of our Campus to Google Indoor maps and they have just said that we would require to submit floor wise plans for adding into Google Maps.
I am not sure how we can acquire that and will it be doable.

Most of the information is in fact there about the Shcool of Engineering. But the Schoool of Management and AWNA is just shown there with no proper description on top of that the School of Biotechnology seems to be invisible.

The floor plans of each of the floors are displayed in the staircase along the administrative block and also the once mentioned by @harshithpabbati above are available. I guess we could find the same resources other campuses as well.
