The script does not work in CS3. The hidden world-ready composer
settings only exist in CS4 and 5. They've been unhidden in CS6.

Make sure the font you're using has Arabic characters. The X boxes
generally mean that the font doesn't have the right glyphs.

I don't know for sure. My theory is that TextEdit fakes the Arabic
glyphs if they don't exist in the font. It prefers text readability
over font accuracy. 

But InDesign prefers accuracy, which is why you have to explicitly tell
it what font to use when using RTL languages.

programmatically create RTL character styles if you can figure out the
undocumented API---then you can run a script like the paragraph style
one. I've never tried that though. I'm still using CS3 ME for all my
RTL needs for now... 

I played around with Word Tools (linked above) a few weeks ago, and it
actually adds RTL options to the paragraph and character style panels,
so you definitely can create Hebrew and Arabic character styles.

Because all the technical ability to deal with RTL stuff is built in
InDesign (and is just undocumented and inaccessible), you  could
technically download the trial for Word Tools, create the appropriate
paragraph and character styles, and uninstall Word Tools. You can use
any styles it makes in any CS4 or CS5 installation. You can even copy
those styles to other documents as needed.

Although once you do that you lose the ability to change the RTL options
in the style---they'll stay hidden. But that's already the case when
you use the script in this blog post to create the paragraph style.

So yeah, you can either play with the script and figure out how to
generate an RTL character style, or you could use Word Tools to create
the style and reuse it in other documents.

In CC you don't need to do this. If you open the creative cloud
preferences and change the app language to "English يدعم العربية", you
can install RTL-enabled versions of all the CC apps. They all handle RTL
natively.
