customization needed outside of the theme itself

We'll need to define a way, where the customization of the them is separate from the theme itself.

I have just updated a site to XOOPS 2.5.8, and totally forgot about few customizations that I did, and they were overwritten. For me it's not a big deal because I'll fix it, but for a new user this could be a disaster.

What would be the best way to accomplish it?

I love the theme but having issues customizing. I finally found the graphic files to switch to my own. However, I can't get rid of the annoying text that displays in the image carousel the Loren Ipsom whatever it is lol. Does anyone know the name or location of that file? I can get to it from the Web Browser when I inspect the code but as far as accessing it through my hosting portal I have had no luck finding it.
