VMWare to KVM Migration fails - "nbdcopy command failed"

Hi,

iam testing the vmware-kvm-feature in our testing-environment right now.
We are running vmware-only environments with advanced networking features in both, production and test.
So i had to build a kvm-zone with advanced networking first.
For setting up the migration-scenario i tried to stick to Shapeblues Guide https://www.shapeblue.com/cloudstack-vmware-to-kvm-migration-tool/ as strict as possible with one significant difference. We use Debian 12 as KVM-OS. Knowing, this isn't officially supported i got the feedback at a user group meeting, that it should technically work as it is very similar to ubuntu.

We now have a Cloudstack 4.19.2.0-Installation with zwo Zones: 1x VMware (2 Hosts) + 1x KVM (1 Host)

Everything generally seems to work and we have all functionalities we are used to. But migration of a vmware-vm to kvm unfortunately does not finish successfully atm. I can monitor the export in vcenter and after it i can follow virt-v2v-conversion via cloudstack-agent-log. But in this process the failure happens.

I suspect an virt-v2v-error 'nbdcopy command failed' to be responsible for the failing migration. See logs and Screenshots attached.

Any suggestions on this?

Got me a step further, but ran into an new error:

The import process failed for instance i-4-57-VM from VMware to KVM on host b-kvm-test-001: Error converting instance i-4-57-VM from VMware, due to: org.libvirt.LibvirtException: cannot unlink file '/mnt/712cdae3-3474-3a73-985a-5165c940db32/df60ddc6-ffe1-4f53-8a6d-685f5c39f9b6-sda': Permission denied

According to agent.log the v2v-conversion was successful now.

This is the secondary storage for that kvm-zone.

Why is it mounted with nobody:nogroup? Can i influence that?
My primary storage is mounted that way too! But i already have several vms running in that zone (1x user-vm + some system-vms).

You need to export your NFS volumes with option no_root_squash, it's in the docs.

Ok, this is a more complicated one (although it seems so easy to achieve):

Its Netapp Storage and since the no_root_squash option isnt supported directly, according to docs you can reach it with special export settings...

My export ist setup like that.

An additional Problem here is client and server defaults to NFSv4 and this adds a check for matching domain-strings, see here:

I can see the nss-error in my kvm-host-log.

Manipulating /etc/idmap.conf for matching domains solved that.
(Domain = defaultv4iddomain.com).

Will keep that in mind for production.

After you modified the superuser set on NetApp are your mounts still with nobody nogroup?

We are using NetApp as well and have superuser set to any. Files as observed from the hypervisors are mounted as nobody nobody.

We recently had some issues when deploying a new zone with the permissions on the SVM disk file that was copied to the new zone. Just trying to figure out if the issue was storage related as other templates were copied with no errors.

Yes, I assume, they were like this all the time, but it caused no problem. Because our Superuser setting was 'sys' from the beginning, which fulfills the condition as well.

I only noticed during my (failed) vmware to kvm migration attempts that all mounts were like this and made with v4. That led me to the mentioned links.
