XCP vs cloud-init with Cloudstack 4.20 and 4.20.1

For the last few days, I've tried to use user-data to automate some stuff through cloud-init. This work very well with KVM cluster but I've not been able to get the same result with XCP 8.2 or 8.2.1 (not tried 8.3 yet which is now just supported with CS 4.20.1). That said, with the same .vhd file used as a template in Xen Orchestra, putting the same exact content as user-data work perfectly.

I saw that there was a bug that was apparently fixed lately ([https://github.com//pull/10912] and I'm not sure to understand if this is supposed to be fixed in CS 4.20.1 or if it's coming for 4.20.2. If it's not yet in 4.20.1, what is the process to get it in there?

If it's already there, then it's not working with my current template. I've done it two way. First way by download a cloud image from ubuntu which is already prepared for cloud-init and I also tried to create an image from scratch and I have the same result which are documented in the issue I mentioned above. There is no cloud.log created so... it means nothing is happening.

Any idea/suggestion would be welcome. Thank you.

@ehfortin this fix did go into 4.20.1. Are you using ConfigDrive service to provider the userdata? Also, Could you please verify if the following https://docs.cloudstack.apache.org/en/4.20.1.0/adminguide/templates/_cloud_init.html#linux-with-cloud-init helps - specifically the note for VMs deployed on XenServer/XCP-ng. T

I'm not sure about how to answer your question regarding ConfigDrive. I'm using the "Register a user data" form that is available in Cloudstack. Is it using ConfigDrive? If not, where can I change the behaviour? Regarding the note for VM deployed on XenServer/XCP-ng, I'll look into it and see if that change the result.

For my knowledge, do people use the standard cloud image distributed by Ubuntu, Debian and some others for both KVM and XCP-ng or those are not working with XCP-ng (seems to work fine with KVM for the few I've tested)?

Well, I guess I probably answer my own question regarding images. The note in the documentation to do this: echo "policy: enabled" > /etc/cloud/ds-identify.cfg is probably not done on default image made by ubuntu, debian and others. So I guess I have to take their image, create a VM from it, do the changes (reducing the datasource-list at the same time) and then recreate a template. Is it about right?
