It would be useful for non-SNAPSHOT artifacts to have an option that allows to set the artifact read-only on the remote repository to avoid that stable versions are overridden by accident.

Closing this as a duplicate of MDEPLOY-74. Even though this is the earlier issue, there is more discussion on the other one.
