Draw a path

Is it possible to draw a custom path that's not part of any data series from the user's perspective?
For example, suppose I wanted to draw a square to indicate a 2-dimensional bounded area of interest or a triangle as we might see on a color gamut chart? I'd even settle for defining SVG points if I knew how to align them with my (zoom-disabled) chart.
