Do uploads work with mergeSchemas or only stitchSchemas?

I'm trying to follow the example in this test, but our gateway currently uses mergeSchemas, not stitchSchemas. We introspect downstream schemas, then use makeRemoteExecutableSchema for each, then finally assemble it all with mergeSchema.

Right now, when I send a request from Postman, it just spins and nothing happens, timing out after a few minutes. If I send the request directly to the downstream service and not through the gateway, it works as expected.

This schema and resolver are added during mergeSchemas

edit app.use(graphqlUploadExpress()); is making it much further, but isn't quite working yet. I can' believe I just left off the function call.

edit2: Now I'm getting BadRequestError: Missing multipart field ‘operations’ but that multipart field is definitely there as it works when sending directly to the downstream GQL service and not through the gateway.

edit3: I think I need to construct the link differently?

Do I need to use createServerHttpLink instead of buildLink?

I ended up using graphql-upload-minimal to supply graphqlUploadExpress instead of the built-in graphql-upload and also had to upgrade node. Working now.
