Data Flow Analysis: DCS to Android DataPad

APP version 1.0.20 (with Security Enhancements) Streamer version 1.0.11 (with PoW Support)

Security Update: This version includes Server Key Pinning (TOFU), optional Proof-of-Work DoS protection, and Pre-Shared Key support.

System Overview

This document provides a comprehensive analysis of the data flow from DCS (Digital Combat Simulator) to the Android ChecklistInteractive app, including all security mechanisms and encryption points.

High-Level Architecture

The system is a three-stage data pipeline designed to securely transmit real-time data from the DCS game environment to an Android application.

  • Stage 1 (Data Source): The Export.lua script runs within DCS, collecting player aircraft telemetry and data on nearby units. It writes this information in plaintext JSON Lines format to several local files.
  • Stage 2 (Middleware & Security Gateway): The forward_parsed_udp.py script acts as a security gateway. It continuously monitors the files created by the Lua script, performs a secure handshake with the Android client to establish a unique session key, encrypts the data using AES-256-GCM, and transmits it over UDP.
  • Stage 3 (Client Application): The Android application, orchestrated by DataPadManager.kt, receives the UDP packets. It performs the client-side of the handshake and uses the resulting session key to decrypt the incoming data.

Architecture Components

1. Data Source (DCS)

  • Export.lua - Lua script running in DCS

  • Update Rate: 10 Hz (configurable via UPDATE_INTERVAL = 0.01)
  • Version: 1.0.10

2. Data Forwarder (Python)

  • forward_parsed_udp.py - Python UDP forwarder
  • Security: ECDH key exchange + AES-GCM encryption
  • Rate Limiting: 50 msg/sec global, 5 msg/IP per 10 sec

3. Data Receiver (Android)

  • DataPadManager.kt - Main reception and state management
  • Database: TacticalDatabase (Room) for persistent unit tracking
  • Update Strategy: Conflated channels for performance

Security Analysis

1. Handshake Security (ECDH Key Exchange)

Strengths:

  • Perfect Forward Secrecy: Each session uses ephemeral keys
  • Mutual Authentication: Both sides verify key derivation via HMAC
  • Server Key Pinning (TOFU): Detects MITM attacks after first connection
  • Curve Security: secp256r1 (NIST P-256), 128-bit security level
  • HKDF Key Derivation: Cryptographically strong key expansion with salt
  • Device Authorization: Whitelist-based access control
  • Optional Proof-of-Work: DoS protection for handshake flooding

Implementation Details:

Curve Validation (KeyManager.kt:168-189):

  • Validates peer's public key lies on the curve: y² ≡ x³ + ax + b (mod p)
  • Prevents invalid curve attacks
  • Ensures curve parameters match (order, cofactor, generator)

Server Key Pinning (KeyManager.kt:28-91, DataPadManager.kt:765-790):

  • ALWAYS ENABLED - No opt-out for maximum security
  • Uses Trust-On-First-Use (TOFU) pattern (like SSH)
  • Stores SHA-256 fingerprint of server public key in SharedPreferences
  • First connection: Auto-pins server key after curve validation
  • Subsequent connections: Verifies fingerprint matches pinned value
  • Key mismatch: Rejects connection and logs security alert
  • Benefits: Prevents MITM attacks after initial connection
  • Location: ServerKeyPinningManager class in KeyManager.kt

2. Data Encryption (AES-256-GCM)

Algorithm: AES-GCM (Galois/Counter Mode)

  • Key Size: 256 bits (32 bytes)
  • Nonce Size: 96 bits (12 bytes)
  • Tag Size: 128 bits (16 bytes) - authenticates ciphertext

Nonce Generation Strategy (Counter-Based):

Format: [sender_id:1][reserved:3][counter:8] = 12 bytes

Sender IDs:
  0x00 = CLIENT (Android app)
  0x01 = SERVER (Python forwarder)

Why Counter-Based Nonces?

  • Random nonces: Birthday paradox → 50% collision after ~2³² messages (4B packets)
  • Counter nonces: NO collision possible (monotonic, unique per direction)
  • Replay protection: Sliding window tracks seen counters (10000 window)

Security Properties:

  1. Authenticated Encryption: GCM tag prevents tampering
  2. Confidentiality: AES-256 encryption
  3. Replay Protection: Nonce tracking rejects duplicate counters
  4. Freshness: Sliding window prevents stale messages

3. Attack Mitigation

4. Bind Address Security

Default: 127.0.0.1 (localhost only)

Performance Analysis

1. Update Rate & Latency

DCS Export (Export.lua):

  • Update interval: 0.01s (100 Hz capable)
  • Actual rate: 10 Hz configured (10 updates/second)
  • JSON generation: ~1-2ms per frame
  • File write: ~0.5ms per line

Python Forwarder:

  • Tail latency: <1ms (inotify/polling)
  • Encryption: ~0.2ms per packet (AES-GCM hardware accelerated)
  • Network send: <1ms (local LAN)

Android Reception:

  • Socket timeout: 10s (prevents blocking)
  • Decryption: ~0.3ms per packet
  • JSON parsing: ~1-2ms (kotlinx.serialization)
  • State update: <0.1ms (StateFlow)

Total Latency (DCS → Android UI):

  • Best case: 5-10ms
  • Typical: 10-20ms
  • Max (network congestion): 50-100ms

3. Database Performance

Tactical Units Processing:

Security Recommendations

Troubleshooting Guide

Issue: No data received on Android

Diagnosis:

  1. Check Python forwarder is running: ps aux | grep forward_parsed_udp
  2. Verify handshake succeeded: Check handshakeStatus in Android
  3. Test network connectivity: ping <android_ip> from PC
  4. Check firewall: Ensure UDP port 5010 is open
