Dear Astropy Community,
2+
3+
Once again, the Interim Finance Committee would like to give you some updates
4+
on our activities over the couple of months.
5+
6+
- The process for selecting Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in Astropy
7+
proposals has been completed [1]. We were delighted with the high-quality of the
8+
proposals received, and with the community discussion which resulted. Thanks
9+
to everybody who took part!
10+
11+
Based on this process, two proposals have been funded: one to fund an
12+
Astropy intern through Outreachy [2] and the other to develop a peer
13+
mentoring network for women of color and other marginalized groups [3].
14+
We're really excited to see these projects make progress!
15+
16+
We very much hope to be able to issue further calls for proposals in this
17+
area in the future. Further, we plan to use a development of the
18+
collaborative selection process developed here for other funding decisions.
19+
Given both of those, we'd love to hear feedback from the community on how
20+
our process could be improved.

25+
26+
- We're pleased to announce that a proposal entitled “Kicking Off Scientific
27+
Software Engineering Learning Resources with the Astropy Learn Project” [4],
28+
submitted by Marten van Kerkwijk, Erik Tollerud, and Kelle Cruz to the
29+
Dunlap Seed Funding program at the University of Toronto, has been accepted.
30+
This provides a total of $31,023 Canadian to develop a set of educational
31+
resources around packaging scientific software and to make them available
32+
through Learn Astropy [5].

36+
37+
- As previously announced [6], the bulk of our funds available for supporting
38+
core developers this year have been allocated to core contributors who were
39+
interested in and able to accept funding. Statements of work for all of
40+
these positions have now been finalized, and are available online [7]. Folks
41+
are hard at work, and the Finance Committee has been processing and
42+
approving invoices.

46+
47+
- The next major project the Interim Finance Committee plans to undertake is
48+
to issue a broad call for proposals for projects to make improvements to any
49+
part of Astropy, including the core repository, coordinated and affiliated
50+
packages, infrastructure, tutorials, workshops, etc. We plan to release this
51+
call after the ongoing discussion over APE0 [8] has concluded.

For more information on our activities, please see the issues labelled
56+
“finance” in the Astropy project repo [9], or read the notes from our weekly
57+
meetings [10]. You can make suggestions for things that need to be funded by
58+
opening an issue in https://github.com/astropy/project/, by emailing
59+
[email protected], or by joining us in the #finance-committee channel on
60+
Slack.
