Dear all,
2+
3+
As Erik announced back in December [1], the Coordination Committee has
4+
established a new Interim Finance Committee. The new committee is charged with
5+
overseeing the distribution of Astropy's funds. The idea is that this committee
6+
is temporary, and will be replaced when the project decides on a new governance
7+
structure.
8+
9+
This committee has now been convened with the following membership:
10+
11+
- Kelle Cruz
12+
- Moritz Guenther
13+
- John Swinbank
14+
- Erik Tollerud
15+
- Steve Crawford (Ombudsperson)
16+
17+
We think it's important that this new committee be open and transparent about
18+
its business. To that end, we wanted to take a moment to fill you in on how the
19+
committee is going about its business, and how you can follow along and provide
20+
comments and suggestions.
21+
22+
First, we've established a wiki page:
23+
24+
https://github.com/astropy/project/wiki/Financial-Management
25+
26+
That page has the full charge to and membership of the committee, as well as
27+
links to key resources and information about how to contact us. We'll make sure
28+
it's kept up to date as and when any of this changes.
29+
30+
The committee meets weekly. We keep running notes on those meetings, which are
31+
publicly available — we welcome your comments on them:

34+
35+
We track the committee's business in the astropy/project repository. You can see
36+
what we're working on, or file issues for us to think about, here:
37+
38+
https://github.com/astropy/project/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3A%22finance+%3Amoneybag%3A%22
39+
40+
We will also aim to send a very brief summary of our activities and approved
41+
expenditures to the astropy-dev list every couple of months.
42+
43+
Finally, you can get in touch with is directly in #finance-committee on Slack,
44+
or by sending mail to [email protected].
45+
46+
We're excited to be able to help out Astropy in this way, and we'd love to hear
47+
your feedback.
48+
49+
Cheers,
50+
51+
John

Dear Astropy Community,
2+
3+
The Interim Astropy Finance Committee has made significant progress over
4+
the last few months. We wanted to take this opportunity to provide you
5+
with some updates on our work, and reminders about ongoing activities.
6+
7+
- We'd like to remind you about the ongoing call for proposals on the
8+
topic of Inclusion, Diversity and Empowerment [1]. We invite members of
9+
the community to submit proposals by the end of August, and have
10+
allocated funding of up to $15,000 to support them. At time of
11+
writing, five proposals have been submitted [2], and we encourage
12+
everybody to consider and discuss them on the appropriate pull
13+
requests. Questions about the proposal process can be directed to the
14+
FAQ [3].

19+
20+
- We are pleased to announce Madison Bray is joining the project again
21+
as the Astropy Software Operational Support Specialist. Madison
22+
started on August 1 and will be providing support for issue
23+
management, helping with pull requests, and improving the contributor
24+
experience. Madison helped set up much of the early infrastructure for
25+
the project, and it is our pleasure to welcome them back!
26+
27+
- We have awarded sub-awards to Matt Craig [4] and Adam Ginsburg [5] to
28+
support their work on the Astropy project.

32+
33+
- For the remaining core developer funds, we decided that it was best to
34+
share this equally among the core contributors that were interested
35+
and able to accept funding for this year. We were then able to offer
36+
support of up to $11,000 to the following contributors: Kelle Cruz,
37+
Adrian Price-Whelan, Lia Corrales, Tom Robitaille, Stuart Mumford, Ole
38+
Streicher, Derek Homer, Stuart Littlefair, Juan Luis Cano Rodrigues,
39+
and Miguel de Val-Barro. Once finalized, the scopes of work will be
40+
posted to issue project/#113 [6].
41+
42+
[6] https://github.com/astropy/project/issues/113
43+
44+
- In addition, the finance committee has also supported a new contract
45+
to include software for Kepler/TESS into the Astropy Ecosystem.
46+
47+
- Finally, we are sorry to announce that Steve Crawford will be stepping
48+
back from the Interim Finance Committee as he moves on to other
49+
opportunities. The rest of the committee extends our heartfelt thanks
50+
to Steve for his contributions, both to this committee and to the
51+
wider Astropy project. We couldn't have achieved all the above without
52+
him!
53+
54+
The committee is now in the process discussing allocation of funding for
55+
the second year of the Moore Grant. If you would like to be more
56+
involved in these discussions, please nominate yourself to join the
57+
committee by sending an email to the Coordination Committee:
58+
[email protected]. We are especially interested in nominations of
59+
folks based from outside the United States or with a diversity of
60+
experiences.
61+
62+
For more information on our activities, please see the issues labeled
63+
“finance” in the Astropy project repo [7], or peruse the notes from our
64+
weekly meetings [8]. You can make suggestions for things that need to be
65+
funded by opening an issue in https://github.com/astropy/project/, by
66+
emailing [email protected], or by joining us in the #finance-committee
67+
channel on Slack.
