Making Keywurl work with Safari 5

Quick fix for now is to simply edit the MaxBundleVersion value in the Info.plist of the Keywurl.bundle. Haven't noticed any problems. I've posted some instructions with a few screen captures at http://hacketal.com/making-keywurl-work-with-safari-5

Update: See below for more details but I believe this fix only works for Snow Leopard users. Unfortunately, I do not have a machine with Leopard installed to try and fix it there as well.

Yeah, Keywurl is essential to my browsing experience. Muscle memory on the keywords makes even a short browsing session a pain when it doesn't work :).

Still early days but I must report that for whatever reason, keywurl makes Safari crach as soon as it opens if I use this tip.

I guess I'll have to wait for an official release to fix whatever the issue is. Is there some sort of crash report I can send that would help get stable Safari 5 support working?

It is def keywurl as I have other SIMBL plugs and have tried every combo of them and only the presence of keywurl breaks things. Safari 5 ALWAYS crashes within 10 seconds of being open with keywurl installed, regardless of any other plugins status.

I'm slightly surprised others have had success. Perhaps it is something specific to my config.

Any tips would be appreciated and if I can send you any info that will help let me know.

I'm totally with @nirmal here about muscle memory - I NEED keyword search!

Looks like Safari 5 extensions can't interact with the URL bar (I've had a quick look through the API) so no official version is yet possible either...

That's odd, even before I modified the Keywurl.bundle Safari didn't crash. The only difference was that Keywurl did not load.

it crashed for me when safari was forced in 32-bit mode. when i ran safari under 64-bit, keywurl didn't crash anymore. not sure what the reason was. works fine for me now

It crashes for me every time. I use MacBook white (not the newest one) with 10.5.8. I assume it's 32 bit only, any fix for that ?

I guess I should add that I am on 10.5.8. Looks like keywurl works fine in Snow Leopard with this hack but not for us stuck on leopard...

I'm thinking that changing the bundle version only works for people on SL 10.6 +
Because I'm on Leopard 10.5.8 and i've noticed that the original bundle version is markedly different then what is in nirmal's screen shots

His lists it as "6531.9" to be changed to "6553.6"

My safari lists it's bundle version as 5533.16 (the number in brackets after "Version 5.0" in Safari->About Safari)

I've tried putting in "5533.16" as the max bundle version but it didn't work. It doesn't matter as the default of 6531.9 as a max bundle version is still higher then 5533.16

So changing the max bundle version isn't going to work with 10.5.8 IMHO

I also have SafariStand installed which has been update for Safari 5 and working fine as well as Click2Flash which seems to be working fine.

Retested without SafariStand and Click2Flash. Still crashing on launch.

Tested on two computers, both running 10.6.3 and Safari 5, made the change to MaxBundleVersion on both. One machine is 64-bit, and Keywurl works as expected. The other machine is 32-bit, and it crashes whenever I start with Keywurl installed. Neither computer has other SIMBL plugins installed.

For those whose Keywurl is crashing on them even after the Maxbundle version change I've managed to find something of a work around using SafariStand's Quicksearch feature. It's not as good as Keywurl though - it can't do encoded spaces nor can it do the more complex searchs that Keywurl does. Also seems to work a little bit slower then Keywurl does and it's UI is a bit ugly.

If you have the time you can manually convert Keywurl's list of keyword searches to SafariStand's Quicksearch feature. It's not exactly like Keywurl but for someone whos in a pinch for keyword searching in the address bar it'll do in a pinch.

~/Library/Application Support/Keywurl/Keywords.plist is where Keywurl's keyword list is stored.

Just don't forget to replace the "{query}" portion of the search URL with "@key" otherwise it crashes.

Maxbundle increment works fine, but I also lose the right-click context menu. Had to completely remove Keywurl and am currently browsing without it, and it sucks! Does anyone know enough about Keywurl to fork this repo and make it Safari 5 compatible?
