Translitirization of non-ASCII symbols for bitmap font

While with classic interface it is possible to use modern fonts that support full range of unicode characters, certain functions (like window shade) require use of bitmap fonts. I think it would be useful to have configurable option to rewrite titles for these uses if they contain incompatible character.
I would like to try it, but I am not sure if this is something needed or if this would be perceived as anti-feature.
