Pause between tracks?

I want give my ears a moment to rest between tracks. I tried the obvious thing of pause %l:10000 and sleep "10" in the Song Change plugin, but that did not seem to do anything. echo -e "\a" does work, but not sleep? Any suggestions for what to do?

audtool (see its man page) commands in a shell script could work. And then call the script with the Song Change plugin.

just curious - if the song change plug can run a command, why doesn't 'sleep' work?
