An update on our current thinking about Python interop—

One can always call Julia from Python using JuliaCall, which can be installed with pip install juliacall, and which provides Julia dependency management through JuliaPkg. A few projects also use this behind the scenes to wrap a Julia core with a Python frontend that can be installed as its own Python package. These typically have small and strictly defined APIs, with a frontend used for problem setup and a Julia backend for computation. In contrast, DeviceLayout.jl has a broad and growing API and exposes a large number of Julia types to the user. So a Python API would be a significant undertaking to develop and support, particularly as we would want to provide a better experience than "bare" JuliaCall where most Julia types look like juliacall.AnyValue objects to Python.

This is all to say that there is a presumption against supporting something like a 1:1 Python wrapper, but given a concrete use case we can certainly discuss what it would look like to improve interoperability.
