Stack creation times out - cannot give ECS Service access to pull from a private repository

Starting from this official hello tutorial:
https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonECS/latest/userguide/tutorial-ecs-web-server-cdk.html

This creates an ApplicationLoadBalancedFargateService and pulls from a public ECR repo. This works fine.
When I modify the example to connect to a private ECR repo, the Stack creation just hangs and times out.

Anyone has a working CDK example of accessing a private ECR repo from within ECS?
