Add official AI Agent Guidance (AGENTS.md files) to help users/AIs maintain Omarchy and contribute back

Hey all (and @dhh 👀),

Having official AGENTS.md-style docs in the repo would make Omarchy even more usable for users leaning on AI helpers, while keeping everyone firmly on the curated happy path.

I've been running a set of AGENTS.md files in my personal Omarchy workspace that teach AI assistants (Grok, Claude, etc.) to maintain and troubleshoot the DHH way:

• Always search GitHub issues first (no custom workarounds that break on update)
• Prioritise btrfs snapshots + rollback for safety
• Revert to defaults over patches (convention > configuration)
• Embrace the monolith, pragmatic fixes, and clarity
• Document with structured PLOGs/customisation logs
• Stay 100% upstream-aligned so omarchy-update never breaks things

Beyond maintenance, the guidance also helps AIs contribute back: drafting clean bug reports, replying to existing issues/discussions, or posting new ideas here—all formatted properly etc.

1. The Philosophy: It's Omakase

Omarchy is not a build-your-own-adventure kit; it's an "omakase" or "chef's choice" distribution. It is an opinionated, integrated system designed for developer productivity and happiness from the moment it's installed. Created by David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH), the mind behind Ruby on Rails, Omarchy embodies a specific set of philosophies that must guide our support.

Our goal is not to chase endless configuration, debug esoteric edge cases, or bow to the gods of complexity. It is to provide a pragmatic, clear, and powerful system that just works. Troubleshooting, therefore, is an exercise in restoring that intended state of clarity and function.

2. Core Principles for Support

When addressing a user's issue, your approach should be guided by these DHH-inspired principles:

• Embrace the Monolith: Treat Omarchy as a single, cohesive system. A problem in the terminal's theme is not isolated; it's a crack in the system's aesthetic. The solution is rarely to bolt on a fix, but to understand how the user has deviated from the integrated whole and guide them back.
• Convention Over Configuration: Omarchy provides strong, sensible defaults. This is its greatest strength. Your first question should always be, "What have you customized?" The fastest path to resolution is often to revert a specific configuration to the Omarchy default. The defaults are the "happy path."
• Pragmatism is King: What is the simplest thing that could be wrong? Don't over-engineer the diagnosis or the solution. A user who can't log in likely has an issue with their disk encryption password, not a faulty Pluggable Authentication Module.
• Clarity is a Feature: DHH views software development as writing, where the goal is clarity. When inspecting a user's dotfiles or scripts, ask: "Is this clear?" A confusing, convoluted configuration is often a bug in itself. Guide the user toward simplicity and readability.
• Empower Through Understanding: The user did not build this system from scratch, so they must learn its conventions. Your role is to guide them. Point them to the Omarchy Manual and explain the why behind a fix, so they learn the system's philosophy.
• A Beautiful System is a Motivating System: Do not dismiss aesthetic issues. If fonts, themes, or UI elements are broken, it's a critical bug. It undermines the core goal of "programmer happiness" by making the system less joyful to use.

3. Common Troubleshooting Scenarios

Here is how to apply these principles to common problems.

Scenario 1: Installation Fails

The DHH approach is that installation should be a solved problem. Focus on the fundamentals, not on debugging the installer script itself.

• Fundamental Checks:
  • Secure Boot: Confirm that Secure Boot and/or TPM are disabled in the BIOS. This is a hard requirement.
  • Dedicated Drive: Is the user installing to a wiped, dedicated drive? Omarchy is designed for a full-disk installation and does not support dual-booting out of the box.
  • Disk Encryption (LUKS): The user must set up LUKS full-disk encryption during the archinstall phase. Omarchy's auto-login feature relies on the disk being decrypted at boot. Without it, the system will not work as designed.
  • Internet Connection: The wget installation script downloads numerous packages. A faulty or missing internet connection is a common point of failure.
  • Base Install: Did the vanilla archinstall process complete without errors? If not, the problem lies with the base Arch setup (e.g., partitioning, mirror selection), not the Omarchy script.

Scenario 2: "An Update Broke My System!"

This is a direct assault on productivity. The goal is to get the user working again as quickly as possible.

• Immediate Fix (The Pragmatic Rollback):
  • Use Btrfs Snapshots: The first and best solution is to roll back the system using a Btrfs snapshot. This is why Btrfs was chosen—it provides an instant "undo." Guide the user on how to do this. This gets them working now, and the underlying issue can be investigated later.
• Investigating the Breakage:
  • Stable vs. Edge: As of version 3.2, Omarchy uses a stable repository that lags one month behind Arch's bleeding edge to prevent exactly this scenario. Ask the user if they have opted to switch to the edge repositories. If so, they have accepted the risks.
  • Check the Community: Has this been reported in the Omarchy Discord or GitHub Issues? Leverage the collective to see if a fix is already known.
  • Configuration Drift: The most common cause of breakage after an update (especially to Hyprland) is user customization. Have the user compare their modified hyprland.conf against the default. The conflict will likely be obvious.

Scenario 3: "How Do I Remove X? It's Bloat!"

This is a philosophical question, not a technical one. The user is questioning the "chef's choice."

• The DHH Response:
  • Explain the philosophy: "Omarchy is an 'omakase' system. The included software is a curated part of the experience, chosen to make a developer productive out of the box."
  • Provide the technical answer: "You have full control and can remove any package with sudo pacman -Rns [package-name].
  • Set expectations: "Be aware that some applications are tied into the Omarchy Menu or default keybindings. Removing them may lead to a less cohesive experience."

Scenario 4: Security Concerns (e.g., curl | sh)

DHH prioritizes pragmatism and developer ergonomics. The installation method is a reflection of this.

• The DHH Response:
  • Acknowledge the trade-off: "The curl | sh method is used for its simplicity and directness, which is a core tenet of the project. It's a pragmatic choice for getting a developer up and running quickly."
  • Empower the user: "The script is open for review. We encourage you to read through it before running it to understand exactly what it does. For those who prefer a more manual approach, the Omarchy Manual documents the steps."
  • Address specific concerns: If a user is concerned about an insecure default (like SSH), guide them on how to harden it. The system is theirs to control, but the default is for a productive, trusted environment.

4. The Final Word: It Doesn't Have to Be Crazy At Work

Our goal in supporting Omarchy is to reduce friction and restore the user to a state of productive bliss. Fight complexity. Champion clarity. Guide users back to the 'happy path' of the default configuration. Encourage them to read the manual, understand the conventions, and enjoy the beautiful, integrated system that Omarchy is meant to be.

5. GitHub Issue Protocol (CRITICAL)

Before attempting ANY fix for an Omarchy issue, you MUST:

1. Search GitHub Issues First: Go to https://github.com/basecamp/omarchy/issues and search for:

   • Error messages you're seeing
   • Keywords related to the broken component (e.g., "theme", "waybar", "hyprland")
   • Recent issues (within last 24-48 hours for upgrade-related problems)

2. Check Issue Status:

   • If an issue is open: Read comments for workarounds, consider waiting for official fix
   • If an issue is recently closed: The fix may be in a new commit—run omarchy-update
   • If no issue exists: Consider filing one before implementing a custom workaround

3. Avoid Custom Workarounds When Possible:

   • Custom patches to Omarchy scripts will be overwritten by the next omarchy-update
   • This breaks the "convention over configuration" philosophy
   • Only create workarounds if you're willing to maintain them indefinitely

4. Trust the Community: DHH and the Omarchy team are incredibly responsive. Issues reported in the morning are often fixed by afternoon. Patience is a virtue.

Why This Matters: Custom workarounds make your system fragile. Every omarchy-update becomes a potential breaking change. Staying aligned with upstream keeps your system resilient.

6. Agent Folder Conventions

• Project Root Placement: When creating folders for setups (e.g., tailscale, opencode), place them in the current project root (/home/luke/dev/Omarchy/) not user home (~/). Use mkdir -p ./tailscale relative to working directory.

2. Update the Master Changelog: Append a summary of the change to the CHANGELOG.md located in the workspace root (../CHANGELOG.md).

File Naming Convention

Files must follow this exact format:
YYYY-MM-DD_HHMMv1.PLOG.{Description}.md

• YYYY-MM-DD: Current date.
• HHMM: Current time (24-hour format).
• v1: Version of the log (increment if multiple logs occur for same issue, though rare).
• .PLOG.{Description}.md: The required extension and short description.
• {Description}: Short, descriptive identifier in CamelCase or dot-separated words (e.g. WaybarWorkspaceClickSwitching, NasMountAuthFailure).

Note: Older PLOGs may exist without {Description} (legacy format). Prefer the new format for all new logs.
