Bug Description

The command basic-memory reset is not resetting the project list

Steps To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Install version v0.13.7
2. Run command bm project add a_project ~/some_path
3. Use tool/feature bm reset
4. Use tool bm project list

Expected Behavior

The project list is empty

Actual Behavior

The project list has not been changed, a_project is still listed

Environment

• OS: macOS 15.1.1
• Basic Memory version: v0.13.7
• Installation method: both uv and Homebrew
• Claude Desktop version (if applicable): n/a

@claude When the user did a reset it removed the sqlite db in ~/.basic-memory/memory.db. This is where the data index from your markdown files is placed. However the project configuration in the ~/basic-memory/config.json did not get modified. Now, when basic memory starts again, it will see the configuration in the json file and try to recreate the projects. Basic Memory always uses the filesystem as the source of truth, so it will start looking for files in those directories and resyncing the db.

You can remove a project with basic-memory project remove , manually. I think the reset should reset the db as well as the config.

Understanding the issue: The basic-memory reset command currently only removes the SQLite database but leaves the project configuration intact, causing projects to be recreated on next startup.

Todo List:

• Analyze codebase structure and find reset command implementation
• Understand project configuration management
• Modify reset command to clear both database and config
• Test the implementation
• Run linting and formatting checks
• Commit the changes

Analysis:

• Found reset command in src/basic_memory/cli/commands/db.py:14
• Configuration is stored in ~/.basic-memory/config.json
• ConfigManager class handles config persistence with save_config() method
• Need to clear the projects dictionary in addition to removing the database

Implementation:

✅ Modified src/basic_memory/cli/commands/db.py

• Added import for config_manager and Path
• Added code to reset project configuration to default state:
  • Clear all projects and set only default "main" project
  • Reset default project to "main"
  • Save the updated configuration
• Added logging to indicate project configuration reset

The fix ensures that basic-memory reset now:

1. Removes the SQLite database (existing behavior)
2. NEW: Resets project configuration to default state
3. Recreates empty database (existing behavior)

This should resolve the issue reported by @groksrc. The reset command will now properly clear both the database and project configuration, preventing projects from being recreated on next startup.
