Bookmarklets with "javascript:" aren't working.

Are bookmarklets supposed to work? The following are the most basic I can think of (which work in Firefox) and they don't work in Beaker:

javascript:(function() { console.log('hi'); })()

javascript:(function() { alert('hi'); })()

javascript:alert('hi');

I have noticed that after I save them they show as javascript:// even though I did not put those two slashes on the end; I can go to my home page and see Bookmarks and edit them and remove the slashes and that seems to save from that view, but the bookmarklets in the toolbar still show '//' on the end and still don't execute.
