left with read only USB pen drive

Just tried to rpi-clone to usb drive 32GB with: sudo rpi-clone sdc. It failed and the USB drive, somehow, became read only device. I can not format it. Read only.

Check with another drive. Looks like your drive is buggy.

Syncing file systems (can take a long time)
