Why is there a limit on 50 links in the sitemap.xml?

I understand that the script is mainly thought for a single user instance, but I'd like to use it on a larger instance like mastodon.de! Is that possible? Should I watch out for things? Can't the sitemap be larger for usecases like this or are there problems with doing that through unofficial scripts?
