Performance difference yaml vs inline?

For performance, does it matter whether you place keys in the yaml frontmatter, or in the body of the note? Perhaps Obsidian offers extra caching for yaml data?

Your intuition is correct. Obsidian's cached metadata is in app.metadataCache. YAML frontmatter will thus be faster to index.

While this is technically true, there is no difference in practice - when a file is indexed, everything is gathered at once (yaml, inline fields, metadata), so there is no performance difference.

The only real performance consideration in Dataview is intelligently using FROM filters to select the appropriate pages (FROM is always faster than WHERE when you can use it).
